Jack brought his mother to our house, thinking they could force us to back down like last time.
Unfortunately for them, without a pregnant woman as a shield, my parents didn’t need to be polite at all.
They didn’t even let them into the house and even called over a few tough relatives.
When Jack’s family tried to appeal to emotions, my mom and the others started loudly spreading the news about how Jack had tricked his mother into having an abortion and how he had been caught soliciting a prostitute.
With other people watching and gossiping, Jack’s family could only tuck their tails between their legs and slink away.
Seeing that there was no room for negotiation this time, they said they wanted to discuss the terms of breaking off the engagement.
We met at a neutral location. As soon as we sat down, Jack’s mother started listing her demands.
“We can break off the engagement, but you must return all the money for the engagement ring, wedding preparations, and dating expenses.
You also need to compensate us for emotional damages and my son’s wasted youth.
“You must clarify in front of all our relatives that breaking off the engagement is your family’s problem, not my son’s fault.”
I almost laughed out of anger. The fury I had been suppressing since my rebirth could no longer be contained.
I slammed the table and stood up: “Bah! Your son has no morals, and you have no shame. You want me to compensate you? That filthy
law–breaker, I’m worried he might have given me some disease.
“If you want money, tell your son to go sell himself. This engagement will be broken off whether you like it or not! Don’t think you can force me to marry your son if we don’t break it off. Keep dreaming!”
I had always been known for my gentle demeanor and rarely lost my temper with anyone. My sudden change in attitude made Mrs. Wilson
clutch her chest in shock.
“You… you… is this how you speak to your elders?” she sputtered.
I snorted coldly: “Elders? You really thought you were something special because I used to respect you? I don’t even want your son anymore, so stop trying to put on airs with me. You’re nothing but a useless mother who raised a son who solicits prostitutes.”
“Lily, how dare you speak to my mother like that? I’ve put up with you for too long. You’ve gone too far,” Jack finally stopped being a coward.
“Oh, look who’s talking. The prostitute–loving son. Tsk! Playing the filial son act, have you forgotten how you tricked your own mother? I’m deeply hurt by this betrayal of trust. If you push me too far, I won’t hesitate to expose all your dirty secrets to your superiors at work. Let them be the judge.”
Jack had always prided himself on working in a government position. If this reached his superiors, he’d surely lose his job.
His mother cursed: “We really misjudged you before. I never thought you could be so vicious. You want to make my son lose his job?‘ It’s just soliciting a prostitute. Which man doesn’t fool around outside? He’s not even married yet, what’s wrong with having some fun? He didn’t use your money to pay for prostitutes, so what right do you have to interfere? It’s because you, his girlfriend, aren’t attractive enough and didn’t take good care of him, so of course he had to go find someone else. Instead of reflecting on yourself, you blame the man and dare to make a fuss. Whoever marries you will have rotten luck.”
My parents, who had always valued proper behavior, couldn’t help but join the fray after hearing such shameless words.
Negotiation was impossible. The two families were on the verge of a physical fight.
After this meeting, I handed the matter over to a lawyer to handle.
