That day, Joshua wore me out in bed.
Lex hadn’t shown up since.
The next time I saw him was at a panel discussion. He looked thinner–hollow, even–with Ivana glued to his side. I gave them a quick, polite nod and went to find my seat.
As I walked away, I could feel his gaze trailing after me.
During the intermission, Ivana cornered me.
“Audrey, since you’re married to Lex’s uncle now could you stop chasing him? Seriously, quit looking for chances to get close to him.” She paused, throwing in a dramatic sigh. “Do you even know what he’s been through? He practically threw his life away for you!”
I lifted my head, meeting her stare. She still had that holier–than–thou vibe, and it grated.

She knew it. Of course, she knew it. She was just so used to looking down on me that she couldn’t adjust. Couldn’t bite back the snark or keep her tone in check.
Ivana bit her lip, silent for a long moment.
Instead, when she saw the faint smirk tugging at my mouth, her expression curdled. “Audrey, what are you so smug about? You’re only here because of Joshua. It’s not that impressive.
“And don’t think I don’t know why you married him. It’s because he’s richer, isn’t it?”
I didn’t take the bait. Instead, I let my eyes drift past her–to the figure looming behind her.
“Lex,” I said casually, “you’re just in time. Take her away.”
Ivana flinched and spun around. Lex was there, his face dark as a thunderstorm. Her confidence cracked, panic flashing across her face. She opened her mouth to explain-
