That night, my phone buzzed with a call from an unfamiliar number.
I picked up and instantly recognized the voice–Roy Rohan, Lex’s best buddy.
“Audrey, what are you up to?”
I turned down my music. “Playing prenatal music for the baby.”
Dead silence. Then Roy’s voice came back, suspicious. “Prenatal… music? You mean that kind of prenatal music?”
“Yeah, probably that.”
“Quit messing with me. You and Lex haven’t seen each other in ages. How could you possibly be pregnant?”
I answered evenly, “The baby’s not his.”
His voice shot up an octave. “Wait, what?! You’re married? And pregnant?!”
“Why? So hard to believe I could get married and have a baby?”
“It’s not that…” He trailed off, like his brain was short–circuiting. “It’s just–you and Lex were engaged for years. You liked him. How could you suddenly marry someone else? You’re lying, right?”
I couldn’t help it—I laughed.
Why does everyone think I’m lying?
Marriage is a big deal. Why would I joke about that?
“It’s true,” I said after a pause. “When we have the wedding, I’ll send you an invite.”
Before I could finish, there was a sudden burst of noise on his end, and the line went dead.
