Ethan walked in, staring at me. “Olivia, I’m so
sorry. I didn’t know about the miscarriage…”
<
The chill of the ocean flooded back. “I know
you love Chloe. Let’s get a divorce. You can
marry her. I wish you all the best.”
“No! I don’t want a divorce!” He rushed to
explain. “There’s nothing going on between
- us. I don’t even like her! Why would I marry
you if I did?”
I stared at him, a cold smile playing on my lips. “Really? You told her you loved her,
Ethan. That you just missed your chance. You
told her you regretted proposing to me. That
<
you’d marry her the second we were divorced.
Was that all a lie, too?”
He’d come home drunk one night, Chloe
helping him inside. I’d been in the guest room
but heard everything. Chloe had left him on
the couch, about to leave, but he’d grabbed
her waist. “I regret it, Chloe. I don’t know why
I asked her to marry me. It was a mistake.”
Chloe, glancing towards the bedroom,
smirked. “So, if you got divorced, who would
you marry?”
L
“You, of course. The second we’re divorced,
I’d marry you. Stay with me tonight, baby?”
She’d left. Probably disgusted by his drunken
state. Looking back, I realized that night was
the beginning of the end. I hadn’t even
bothered to confront them. I’d already lost
hope.
Sarah shooed Ethan out of the room. He
didn’t give up. My phone buzzed incessantly. He’d unblocked me. Dozens of messages. “Chicken soup is good after a miscarriage. I’ll
<
make you some later.” “Don’t eat anything
cold. Keep your stomach warm. I ordered you
some bird’s nest soup, too.” “I messed up.
Can we just forget about it?”
I didn’t reply. I muted his messages and asked
for a private room, emphasizing no visitors. He called, begging to see me. I finally
answered, exasperated. “Ethan, I don’t want
to see you. We can discuss the divorce when
I’m better.”
“Just one quick look, Olivia. I won’t bother
L
you,” he pleaded.
I hung up and turned off my phone.

Three days later, I was discharged. Ethan was
waiting. “You’re out! I’ll drive you home.”
I got in the car. As he started the engine,
Chloe’s voice chirped through the speakers.
“Welcome back, my CEO! Work hard, make
that money for me! ??”
