Chapter 1 I Agreed to Divorce

“You have to let your husband know about the dilation and curettage. Ask him to come in and sign the consent form before we can move forward with the surgery.” When the doctor delivered the heartbreaking news to Jazlyn Xander that her baby had passed, Kingsley Zinn was by his true love’s side for a routine prenatal check-up. Jazlyn clenched her hands, her fragile shoulders shaking slightly. A bitter, faint smile formed on her pale face as she asked, “Can I sign it myself?” The doctor glanced at her seriously and said, “It’s hospital rule. Your husband isn’t the president—can’t he take a little time to come here? It’s pointless to have a husband like that.” Jazlyn had no answer. She and her husband had been in a silent standoff for a month, but she still refused to divorce. What exactly was she holding on to? A month earlier, the Xanders had collapsed into bankruptcy. Her father ended his life by jumping off a building, and her mother’s mental state shattered, landing her in the hospital. That day, Jazlyn went out into the heavy rain to find Kingsley, drenched from head to toe. To her shock, she found him in the kitchen, carefully preparing a meal for Freya Quinlan, whose slightly rounded belly revealed her pregnancy. He had never done a single household task and always acted as if he were above everything. In the three years of their marriage, he had never once made her a simple meal, not even a plate of pasta. Now, he was making a pregnancy meal for another woman. Jazlyn looked at Freya, who resembled her in some ways, with her soft, gentle features. Despite being pregnant, she didn’t appear to have any swelling. Standing next to Kingsley, they looked like a happy, newlywed couple, while Jazlyn, the legitimate wife, had become an outsider in her home. She wanted to ask him to help the Xanders. Although he had distanced himself from her family after marriage, she knew she was pregnant at that time. For three years, he had been careful with contraception. But this time, after drinking, he had unintentionally gotten her pregnant. She thought he might help the Xanders because of the child. “Let’s get a divorce.” Seeing Jazlyn in such a weak state, Kingsley didn’t ask questions but instead suggested divorce for the first time. Jazlyn looked at the smiling Freya standing next to him. Without asking, she understood why he wanted a divorce. “I don’t agree.” Her voice trembled as she whispered the words. After that, Kingsley left their villa, and they never saw each other again. Today, Jazlyn was handling her father’s funeral on her own when troublemakers caused a scene. She was shoved to the ground, which led to a miscarriage. Holding her medical report, she hesitated before calling Kingsley. “Are you finally agreeing to the divorce?” Kingsley’s cold voice came through. Our child is gone. Could you come and sign the surgery papers? Those words stuck in her throat. Jazlyn stayed silent for a long time, feeling that Kingsley’s disgust came through the phone. “Yes, I agree.” Kingsley seemed somewhat surprised. In the past, whenever he brought up divorce, she would beg him desperately, refusing to let go. But this time, she agreed without hesitation. “Meet me at the City Hall at nine tomorrow morning.” “Kingsley, look, the baby’s ultrasound is ready. I think it looks just like you.” Freya’s coquettish voice came through the phone, and it felt like an invisible hand wrapped around Jazlyn’s throat.
