“You’re already in this state, yet you’re still staying up late to sketch,” Noah muttered as he picked up her medical report.
When he saw the record of a dilation and curettage procedure, his expression froze. He looked at Jazlyn in disbelief.
“You-”
“Shh … ” Jazlyn interrupted softly and let out a tired sigh. “Honestly, I was married, but I’m trying to get a divorce. My husband refuses to come and sign the papers. That’s why I need a favor–can you pretend to be my husband and sign for
me?”
Noah stared at her in shock. “You were married? Who is this guy? And where was he when you went through a miscarriage? Why wasn’t he taking care of you?”
“He’s just a regular guy,” Jazlyn said flatly. “Our marriage has been strained for a long time. He doesn’t have much money, and I doubt he’d spend a cent on my surgery. We’re already on the verge of divorce. Honestly, I’d rather not talk about him—just pretend he doesn’t exist.”
Noah’s eyes softened as he looked at her, his concern obvious.
“Back in school, you were the campus belle–both beautiful and a top talent in the Design Department. You had so many admirers that we all wondered what kind of exceptional man would end up being your match. I never thought you’d marry someone so… unworthy and cold–hearted.”
Jazlyn forced an awkward smile, unsure of how to respond.
He snorted. “A man like that is no better than an animal.”
“Yes…” she murmured, forcing an awkward smile as she tried to hold her composure.
No one knew about her secret marriage to Kingsley. With the divorce looming, she had no intention of sharing it now.
“Doctor, my husband is here. He can sign the papers for the procedure,” she said, her voice steady.
The doctor entered, glanced at Noah standing nearby, and wordlessly handed him the consent form.
“Jazlyn, go ahead with the surgery. I’ll get some supplements ready for you later,” Noah said, his voice carrying a tinge of pity as he watched her walk into the examination room alone.
The examinations were completed quickly. Jazlyn lay motionless on the examination table while the doctors worked.
Her mind wandered–had Freya gone through this same process?
At least Freya had Kingsley beside her, someone to rely on. But what about her? She only had herself.
When the doctor returned, Jazlyn sat up and asked, “Can we start the procedure now?”
“You might not need the surgery,” the doctor said, looking puzzled.
“What do you mean?” Jazlyn’s voice wavered, her heart pounding.
“Who told you that you miscarried? Your examination results show otherwise–you’re still pregnant. The embryo is still there.”
Jazlyn froze, her eyes widening in disbelief. “I didn’t lose the baby?”
Her hand instinctively moved to her stomach as memories of that terrible day resurfaced–the sharp pain, the terrifying sight of blood, and the doctor’s grim pronouncement that she had miscarried. Since no one had been there to sign for further tests, nothing else had been done.

The doctor’s words left Jazlyn feeling torn. The baby was still alive, but keeping it could be risky.

Her hand hovered uncertainty over the surgical consent form, unable to make the final decision. Just then, her phone rang sharply, breaking the silence.
“Jazlyn! Debt collectors showed up at Frostwind Garden,” Ruby’s frantic voice blurted out. “You need to come here right away!”
Jazlyn quickly left the hospital and rushed to the address Ruby had mentioned.
When she walked in, she felt something was off.
“Mr. White, you’ve already met my daughter,” Ruby was saying in an overly sweet tone. “She’s well–educated, never worked a day in her life, and has always been obedient. She’s perfect for staying at home and taking care of the family. Since Mrs. White has passed, you may consider her.”
Jazlyn’s expression froze as she realized what was happening.
