hapter 2 Disappointment
Jazlyn couldn’t hold it in any longer. She dropped the phone, leaned forward, and threw up violently. The call ended abruptly. Kingsley stood frozen, staring at the screen, confused. He wondered why Jazlyn suddenly agreed to the divorce. And before the line cut off, he thought he’d heard something strange in the background. “Kingsley?” Freya’s voice broke through his daze, sounding displeased. “What’s wrong with you? You’re completely distracted.” Snapping back to the moment, Kingsley replied, “I went back to get some documents. She agreed to the divorce.” For a second, Freya looked thrilled. But when she noticed his blank expression, her excitement faded. He didn’t look as pleased as she had expected. … The three-story villa at Harbor Street 39 had been their marriage home for the past three years. Kingsley hadn’t stepped inside for over a month. In the past, whenever he returned home, he would find a warm presence in the room—a figure standing in the kitchen, carefully making congee for him. He had a serious stomach issue and often threw up after eating. But after marrying Jazlyn, she had taken care of him for three years, and his stomach had improved significantly. But now, the room was dark and empty. He stepped into the room where they had once shared their intimacy. The big bed was missing his neatly folded pajamas, and the familiar scent of incense was gone too. In only one month, the space that once felt like home now seemed unfamiliar. The door creaked behind him. Jazlyn stood there, staring at the tall man in front of her. Kingsley wore his usual black outfit—the shirt she had carefully chosen for him and the diamond brooch she had given him on his birthday. He was with Freya now, yet he still wore those things. The thought of him wearing the clothes she had picked out while being with Freya disgusted her. “Why are you back?” she asked sharply. Jazlyn had lost weight, and he noticed her pale appearance. He wondered if it was because he had mentioned divorce, causing her to feel upset. His heart, which had been in turmoil, somewhat calmed at that moment. “You look awful,” he remarked. Jazlyn scoffed. “Are you worried about me?” “Don’t die before the divorce. I don’t want to end up a widower with a bad reputation for causing my wife’s death.” His cold words struck her like ice. It was clear—that was the real him. If he ever started caring for her, she would wonder if something had changed in him. After their marriage, the closest they had ever been was in bed. It was obvious he was attracted to her body, but once the passion faded, so did his warmth. Jazlyn had once believed that since Kingsley was willing to touch her, perhaps he liked her, even just a little. But when she saw Freya’s eyes, so similar to hers, everything clicked. She finally understood why he had agreed to marry someone of her status, someone who wasn’t worthy of him. She also realized why, despite being married, no one knew about their relationship. It was better to part ways. She didn’t want to stay in a loveless marriage anymore. After tomorrow, she would get rid of the remnants in her stomach. Along with that, she would erase the final traces of the mess in their marriage. After that, they would never have to cross paths again.
