Chapter 21 Macaroons
Freya walked in with the macaroons, only to be greeted by an unexpected sight.
Kingsley had just ended his phone call, his face contorted with a rage she had never seen before. It was as if he was ready to kill someone. Without a word, he grabbed his jacket and stormed toward the door.
“Kingsley, where are you going? Did something happen?” Freya asked, her voice laced with concern.
“I have something urgent to deal with,” he replied briskly.
Tears welled up in Freya’s eyes as she grabbed his sleeve. “But I just finished the macaroons, and now you’re leaving? You….
Her gaze was filled with unspoken affection and grievance, pulling at Kingsley’s heart.
“Alright, I do have to go. I’m sorry. I’ll have some next time,” he said, his tone softening.
He glanced at the macaroons and sighed, eventually reaching out to take a small piece with a spoon.
The sweetness spread across his palate, but he frowned instinctively.
Freya’s heart lifted momentarily, but her anticipation faded as she noticed the look in his eyes.
“How does it taste?” she asked hopefully.
“Did you put in too much sugar?” he asked honestly.
Freya froze. “No, it’s the same as before. You used to like it this
way,
didn’t you?”
Kingsley hesitated, momentarily at a loss for words.
Was it? Was this the same taste as before? Somehow, it felt so different from what he had imagined.
And compared to the macaroons Jazlyn usually made, this fell short in ways he couldn’t quite articulate, leaving him vaguely disappointed.
He realized, much to his discomfort, that he had started comparing Freya to Jazlyn.
Shaking off the thought, he composed himself and said casually, “Maybe I just ate it too quickly. Anyway, you should get some rest. I have things to handle.”
Kingsley set the spoon down, picked up his jacket, and walked out the door.
“Hey, Kingsley…”
Freya had thought he might stay, but to her dismay, he had only humored her by taking a bite before leaving so decisively.
D*mn it! What on earth was so important that he couldn’t stay? Could it be Jazlyn again?
Meanwhile, Jazlyn hung up the call and cursed silently.
She knew she could never pull off Freya’s delicate charm, not in this lifetime.
Linda and the others were left stunned after hearing Jazlyn’s conversation.
Rumors had swirled that Jazlyn had married some old man, which explained her three–year absence and her complete radio silence with her classmates. She hadn’t even invited anyone to a wedding.
They assumed she’d been too embarrassed to share the news.

Chapter 21 Macaroons
O
Jazlyn gave her a reassuring look and pulled Emily behind her. “Don’t worry. I know what I’m doing.”
“But…”
But what would happen if her husband showed up?
Wasn’t he just a regular guy?
Ten minutes later, Linda, who had been lounging with her legs crossed, began to grow impatient.
Finished
“Jazlyn, are you bluffing? Is there even such a person, or did you just make a random call and claim it was your husband to get out of this?”
Jazlyn clenched her fists, her palms damp with sweat.
Kingsley’s office wasn’t far from here. Why was he taking so long?
Could it be that he wasn’t coming at all?
Even with such blatant provocation, was he so indifferent that he wouldn’t bother?
