Chapter 5
It made sense. Though Shawna frequently sought Arthur out, she’d never asked him for money, no matter how hard it was for her to put food on the table.
She was smart. Firstly, she knew I could demand she repay whatever money she’d taken because it was considered mine and Arthur’s. Secondly, she didn’t want Arthur to think she was a gold digger.
The hooligan waved the bank card in the air while laughing. “Remember to get us to do whatever job you need done in the future. We’re old friends now, aren’t we? We’ll give you a discount next time. I’m sure the rumors you company worked well, right?”

Shawna lost her patience and snapped, “Hurry up and leave! He’s coming to drop something off for me soon. Remember to keep your mouths shut, or you’ll pay the price! I’m sure you know what Arthur is capable of!”
The hooligans turned to leave. When the man in the lead opened the door and saw Arthur standing there, looking furious, he and his men were startled. Then, they fled in fear.
Meanwhile, Shawna’s expression twisted. Perhaps it was because she wasn’t sure how much Arthur had heard–she ran right into his arms and said pitifully, “Leona still refuses to let me off the hook, Art. She sent those hooligans to harass me! I’m scared!”
Arthur smiled self–deprecatingly before saying coldly, “Leona’s dead. How could she have hired those hooligans? Have you convinced yourself that you’re right because of all the acting you’ve done, Shawna?”
She stiffened. Then, she released him and backed away with a sneer. Perhaps she’d realized that there was nothing she could say to deny the truth.
“I’ve done all of this for you, haven’t I? How could you have married her so soon after I left? Is there anything about me that can’t compare to her? All I did was take your father’s money! What about you? You’ve been stomping all over her love while getting involved with me. Don’t you think you’re a hypocrite, too?”
I’d never once raised my voice against Arthur throughout our marriage, but Shawna’s words made me realize I should’ve said the same things to him long ago.
He slapped her. “I’ve never slapped a woman in my life. I was blind to have allowed you to come this far! I’ll give you two choices now. Either you get the hell out of this city or dig Leona’s kidney back out and die with her!”

That scared Shawna. She knew what Arthur was capable of, but I knew better. He wasn’t lying about never having slapped a woman–he’d merely employed harsher methods and tormented me in different ways.
Shawna immediately packed her things and fled the apartment. However, a car rammed into her while she was crossing the road, and she died on the spot.
I wasn’t too fazed when I heard the news. Neither Shawna nor I had been loved. She’d used so many extreme methods to get rid of me over the years, wanting to prove to me that Arthur loved her wholeheartedly.
It was too bad she was wrong. Arthur only loved himself.
