Robert called his assistant. “Book me the earliest flight to Umbragrad,”
For the tenth time, the McLeod Holdings butler turned him away. Robert hadn’t eaten or drunk anything in nearly a week. His body had reached its limit. His vision went black, and he collapsed at the gates of the McLeod estate.
From a distance, I watched him lying motionless on the ground, my expression unreadable.
“Take him to the hospital.”
When Robert opened his eyes again, all he saw was a stark white ceiling. He sat up, only to meet my cold, indifferent gaze.
“Adalyn! You’re finally willing to see me. Your eyes…”
I looked down at him. “Disappointed to see I can see again?”
Robert lowered his head, his voice rough, filled with pain. “I’m sorry, Adalyn. I hurt you. I lost my mind… I don’t even know how I could’ve done something like that,”
Then, a flicker of hope flashed in his eyes.
“It was Lexi. She was the one who seduced me–I wasn’t thinking straight.”
“I brought her here. Do whatever you want with her. I’ve arranged for the best doctors. I’ll get back everything you lost. Just… give me a chance to make things right.“W
Just as his hand was about to touch me, I took two steps back, letting out a quiet, amused laugh.”
“Robert, after all these years, I’m only now realizing how much of a coward you are. I must’ve been blind back then. You’re blaming everything on Lexi, but tell me–if you hadn’t fallen for her, would you have still hurt me the way you did? You were the one who made those choices. If it wasn’t Lexi, it would’ve been someone else.”W
Robert’s face paled. Shame crashed over him like a tidal wave. Even now, he couldn’t bring himself to admit the truth–that, deep down, he had loved Lexi.
To him, she had always been just a fleeting indulgence, a toy to keep on the side. He never once thought that because of her, he would lose me for good.
Slowly, he sank to his knees. When he looked up, his eyes were red, filled with raw regret.”
“Adalyn… what can I do to make you forgive me?” His voice was hoarse, almost desperate. “Please, believe me–I’ve cut all ties with Lexi. It’s over. The only woman I’ve ever truly loved… has always been you.”
Robert McLeod, once so proud and untouchable, was now on his knees, begging me to stay.“]
His voice cracked as he pleaded once more. “Adalyn… please. Just one more chance.”
I slipped the diamond ring off my finger and flung it at him. My voice was cold, utterly devoid of warmth.
“If my brother hadn’t found me in time, I’d already be a corpse by now. Robert, you owe me a life.“”
“But I don’t want your life anymore–it’s filthy. Just don’t ever show your face in front of me again. The McLeods… my brothers won’t let Bain Group off so easily.”
I turned to leave, but the moment I did, Robert lurched forward on his knees, grabbing the hem of my dress.
“Adalyn! Who hasn’t made mistakes in this lifetime? I’ll give you my life if that’s what it takes. Just give me one more chance–let me stay by your side. Even if I can’t be your husband, even if all I can do is take care of you from a distance…. as long as I can see you smile, that’s enough for me.”
I yanked my dress free from his grip, glancing down at him. My eyes were filled with nothing but disgust–no hatred, just sheer revulsion.
“Robert, you make me sick.” As I stepped out of the hospital room, Spencer draped a coat over my shoulders, his brows furrowed in confusion.
“Ada, Robert deserves worse than death. Why not let us deal with him? Why only take down Bain Group? After everything he did to you-”
I let out a quiet laugh, my voice calm.
“Spencer, please, there’s no need to dirty our hands.”
