I decided to go ahead with the divorce because I had enough proof to make sure he walked away with nothing. Wendy’s Instagram post gave me exactly what I needed.
Carl losing everything was as good as guaranteed.
“Hailey, why are you pushing me like this?” he questioned.
I let out a frustrated laugh. “Let’s get one thing straight, Carl. You’re the one who wanted a divorce first. Besides, you don’t want Wendy playing the other woman, do you?”
Didn’t he want a future with Wendy? Fine, I’d make it easy for them. But I was taking every cent. It was what he owed me.
Carl fell silent, probably weighing whether to choose me or Wendy.
“I’m not divorcing you,” he finally said, then hung
- up.
I was so annoyed. He was the one who pushed for the divorce, and now he was the one backing out? What did he think I was, some kind of fool?
But honestly, I didn’t care anymore if he went through with it or not. I was done with this
marriage. I got a lawyer, had the divorce agreement drawn up, and sent to our place.

Chapter 7
The divorce was happening in a month, with or without Carl’s cooperation.
What I didn’t expect was that Carl never showed up -Wendy did instead. She sat across from me, her eyes all puffy and red.
“Why are you doing this?” she asked.
I blinked, totally confused. “Doing what?”
“He promised he’d divorce you and marry me. Why do you have to mess everything up?”
I scoffed. Wendy actually thought I was the one stalling the divorce, keeping her from taking my spot.
I gave her a once–over. I had to admit she was pretty good–looking. She was seriously ill but still had this healthy glow and enough energy to pick a fight with me. Shouldn’t she be more focused on getting better?
“You’re overthinking this. I’m not the one holding up the divorce,” I said flatly. “He is.”
Wendy got all worked up. “That’s impossible! I’ve already given myself to him! He promised me!”
I used to think she was despicable. Now, I just felt sorry for her for buying into Carl’s empty promises, even though I’d been there, too.

I sneered. “He’s the kind of man who’d lie to his wife. Only a fool like you would treat him like he’s some kind of prize.”
Once, Carl swore he’d take care of me forever, but what did he do? His heart was the first thing to rot, and then his body followed.
And once he turned into garbage, I was done. There was nothing left to hang onto.
“No way! He would never lie to me!” Wendy covered her face.
Then, out of nowhere, she pulled a knife from her pocket and stabbed herself in the stomach.
My eyes widened in shock.
