But behind him, Sharon’s gaze inadvertently flicked to Evan standing behind me. She stepped forward, placing herself directly in front of Eugene, and spoke.
“Opal, was it Evan who saved you? How did you survive falling from such a high altitude? And how did you just happen to run into Evan? Were the two of you already in contact?”
Was she trying to imply that I had orchestrated all of this?
“And you knew Evan has been competing with Eugene for the Shaw family inheritance. Yet here you are, conveniently coming out of the woods with him. Opal can you really claim none of this is connected to you?”
I took a deep breath and looked at Sharon again. In my previous life, her body was never found, and the guilt consumed me.
After all, Sharon was only a few months younger than me, and I had always treated her like my own little sister.
Now, it seemed she didn’t feel the same way about me
Watching her press on, relentless and accusatory, I couldn’t hold back any longer.
Striding up to her, I ignored her condemning glare and slapped her hard across the face.
Smack!
Sharon immediately clutched her cheek, staring at me in disbelief. Even Eugene was looking at me with wide, shocked eyes.
I casually blew on my hand, as if dusting off imaginary debris.
The world went silent.
Perfect.
Raising my hand, I turned to the police officers who had just arrived, their presence slightly delayed. “Officer, I’d like to report her for slander.”
And with that, we were all taken to the station.
Sharon accused me and Evan of staging the entire incident to sabotage Eugene. Meanwhile, I reported Sharon for spreading false accusations.
Caught in this mess of accusations and counter–accusations, we all ended up at the police station together.
While waiting for the police interrogation, Sharon still wouldn’t let up. She glared at me as if trying to pry some useful information out of me.
