Rick groped around, picking up a wine bottle and attempting to smash it over Jason’s head.
Seeing this, I rushed forward, trying to grab Rick’s hand. However, his strength was overwhelming, and I was struggling to hold on.
At that moment, the sound of sirens echoed in my ears. Several police officers got out of their cars, guns drawn, and approached us.
“Drop everything now!” The officer’s voice was firm and commanding. They quickly subdued Rick and placed handcuffs on him.
“Rick, you are suspected of embezzlement, intentional assault, and defrauding others of their money. You’ll need to come with us to the station.”
Both Jason and I were also asked to go and give statements.
I looked at the blood on the corner of Jason’s mouth. “He wouldn’t have done anything to me. You should have waited. The police would have come soon enough, and now you’re hurt so badly.”
“I was worried about you, and besides, that scumbag has had it coming for a long time. This was the perfect opportunity, wasn’t it?”
I glared at him and smacked him lightly on the shoulder. “No, it wasn’t!”
“It hurts.” He crouched down, clutching his shoulder with his other hand. “Now you know it hurts? Then you shouldn’t have acted so impulsively earlier.”
“I was beating him up for you. You should be happy.” He grinned mischievously. “Jason, I’m furious. What if that scumbag had seriously injured you?” His words made me feel relieved, but I was still worried about his injuries. “Stop joking around. Let’s go to the hospital and get you checked out.”
“It’s nothing serious. Let’s just go home.”
I carefully treated and bandaged his wounds. “Next time, don’t be so reckless.”
Jason nodded obediently like a puppy. “There won’t be a next time. I won’t give him another chance.”
In the gentle dusk, Jason and I strolled along a cobblestone path, shaded by lush sycamore trees. Our shadows stretched long behind us.
