This time, I chose to believe Selena.
She watched as I raised my hand and swung it hard toward James’s face. I put everything I had into that punch, splitting his lip.
“Are you nuts?” James growled, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. “We’re sworn brothers, Seb. You hit me over this woman?”
He looked me straight in the eyes. “You don’t even know, do you? This woman has been with me for seven years. You don’t like less anymore because of her, right?”
Wiping the blood away, he continued, “Do you even know what’s been happening with Jess these past few days? She’s been a shell of herself. Crying all the time, saying she’s lost you. If I had known the woman you liked was Selena, I would’ve slapped some sense into you the night I came back.
“Because this woman–she’s a lot more filthy than you realize!”
As James spoke, he grabbed Selena’s shoulder and shoved her behind him.
“I don’t know what happened between you and Jess, and I don’t want to get into it. But if you’re willing to throw her away for this woman, you’re making a huge mistake.”
I couldn’t take it anymore.
“Enough!” I shot back, my voice firm. “I’ve always looked up to you as a big brother, but now? Now, your wife is at home, and you’re here, dragging Selena around and talking like that. I don’t care what happened in the past. She is my girlfriend now, and I’ll protect her. No one, not even you, is going to hurt her.”
I turned to Selena and held out my hand. “We’re going home, Lena.”
Her hand trembled as her fingers curled into fists, her nails digging into her palms. I could see the hesitation in her eyes. I knew she was worried about something, but I wasn’t about to let that stop us.
“Don’t worry about anything. Trust me. I’ll take care of it, repeated.
Just as Selena seemed to be convinced, James reached out and cupped her face in his hand, a sickening smirk on his lips.
“Go upstairs and wait. Let me have a word with him, Lena, he said.
Things had reached this point–they needed to be settled.
It was only at my nod that Selena finally turned and headed for the hospital building.
