Chapter 38
Four years ago, I was sent on a business trip out of town in December. It turns out, that was when Jessica was hospitalized. For four years, she never mentioned it to me once.
I honestly didn’t know how to describe how I felt right now
On one hand, I knew Selena was willing to give up her dream for me. On the other hand, I realized that when I was at my lowest, it was Jessica who stepped in to help me.
I laughed bitterly. Life was really cruel to me.
I have no idea how I made it back into the city. But just as I was getting close to the company, I got a call from Selena. She said the doctor told her that her brother had briefly woken up, but was still in critical condition. He could wake up again at any moment, so she needed to stay with him at the hospital.
Selena was already there, so I immediately drove over. By the time I arrived, Christopher was awake. Though his body was still weak, he was holding his sister’s hand tightly and speaking to her.
Remembering what James had said, I didn’t go in right away. Instead, I stood quietly outside the door and listened. Christopher weakly asked Selena to take out a card from the drawer of the bedside table.
He said, “This is the money I’ve saved for you. Since you were little, your dream has always been to study overseas. Our parents also thought that having someone from the family go abroad would be a real source of pride. “This is probably the end of the road for me, so I can’t save any more money for you. Once you go abroad, you’ll have to manage on your ownL
Selena cried uncontrollably, choking out, “No, don’t talk like that. I need you to stay with me.”
Christopher smiled weakly. “Of course, I’ll stay. Don’t cry. I still want to see you go abroad.”
“Okay.” Selena nodded, still crying.
My heart was a tangled mess as I stood outside the door watching them.
Going abroad had become so much more than just Selena’s dream…
I sent her a text saying I would be late meeting her as I had to deal with an urgent matter at work. Once I was out of the hospital, I called a friend of Selena’s from the same company and found out that the deadline for study abroad applications was tomorrow.
I asked him to help me prepare the forms, then drove back to the apartment to get some of Selena’s documents and personal papers.
I was going to apply for her. I didn’t want to regret it, and I didn’t want her to regret it either.
I went to meet Samuel, and together, we visited the friend who was helping us. With his assistance, we managed to get Selena’s application in. He told me that Selena would be informed tomorrow when she went to work.
After leaving Selena’s friend’s place, a breaking news report suddenly appeared on the digital billboard across the
street.
“Breaking news: It has been confirmed that Cameron Judd one of the members of the drug trafficking gang at Ashenford Prison, escaped during a transfer. His whereabouts are currently unknown, and the police are actively searching for him. If anyone has any information, please contact the authorities…”
