Chapter 14: A New Direction
I didn’t go back to apply for that government job at the county office. Having wished on a shooting star, I decided to give myself one last chance.
One more book. A final attempt.
If it failed, I’d abandon this path completely.
That night, I sat in front of my computer for a long time, hesitating. I finally threw out all my previous ideas and had a new thought.
I didn’t want to write romance anymore.
I wanted to write a female power fantasy.
After the meteor shower, Jake and I entered a cold war.
He didn’t contact me for a long time. When I went to our usual restaurant, the
owner asked:
“Where’s Jake? Haven’t seen him in ages.”
“He’s dating someone now. Spending time with his girlfriend these days.”
The owner looked surprised. “You two weren’t a couple? I always thought you were together. You had such great chemistry, always hanging out.”
I just smiled. “We were only ever friends.”
Surprisingly, Olivia reached out to me first.
“My friend just opened this huge new escape room–supposedly the biggest in the city. She asked us to test it out, give a review. Why don’t you and Alex join us?”
I declined. “Sorry, we’re probably too busy right now.”
Jake and I had reached this point–there was no need to maintain contact. Though we’d been close in the past, maybe our relationship had run its course. Further
interaction would only make things awkward for everyone.
“Please come, it would really help me out. Jake and I don’t have many close.
friends, and I don’t know who else to ask.”
When she put it that way, it was hard to refuse. I glanced at Alex.
Alex raised an eyebrow and nodded.

“Alright, send me the location.”
Olivia laughed. “Great! This Saturday at 7 PM. See you then.“
