Chapter 5
I turned to see Harold standing there, looking like a mess. He was panting heavily. This was a look I’d only seen on him when he’d been worried about Ivory.
He pursed his lips and looked at me defiantly. “Why did you leave for no reason? What’s going to happen to the wedding if you just go off without saying anything?”
The wedding? Did we still have that?
I said, “Let’s break up.”
“What did you say?” His jaw dropped in disbelief, and he stared at me from where he stood.
Meanwhile, I turned and walked past the boarding gates without another look back. After getting onto the plane, I couldn’t help thinking back on the time we spent together.
Harold and I were together for ten years. Initially, he’d cared for me and treated me well, but that had changed at some point. He’d suddenly gotten into the habit of ordering me around–he’d only had eyes for Ivory.
I became a nanny that fluttered around him and pestered him, and he refused to spare me another glance.
Despite our decade together, he never proposed. I’d ultimately lost my patience and proposed to him before all of our friends.
At the time, he’d agreed, albeit with a dark look. After we arrived home, he’d said to me, “I can marry you think of it as me taking responsibility for you. Don’t even dream about having a wedding, though. We can just register the marriage. It’s been years, so there’s no need to put on a huge show for everyone to see.”
I’d been thoroughly disappointed then. A wedding was every woman’s dream, after all. Still, I didn’t realize the severity of the situation because I’d been so overwhelmed by the joy of our imminent marriage. I’d thought I could convince him otherwise as long as we talked things out.
Ultimately, Harold had relented. He’d agreed to have a simple wedding with some of our closest friends and family. A few days later, he’d changed his mind–he’d wanted to have the wedding at a pizzeria of his choice.
Fortunately, I’d woken up from my dream. I didn’t expect him to come to the airport to look for me, though.
I later learned what had happened after Harold had gone to Ivory’s rescue. By the time he arrived, the huge bug she’d been afraid of had disappeared. However, he still helped her check her place thoroughly when he saw her almost in tears from her fear. He killed a few spiders in the process.
