So, I was his plus–one for the gala.

Seriously? Were all the other women in the world dead? If not, there was always Wendy, his secretary. Why on earth did this fall to me?
“Sorry, I really didn’t have any other choice. I had to trouble you, Senior,” Aaron leaned down to murmur near my
ear.
From this angle, I could see the small beauty mark at the corner of his eye, paired with his sharp nose and faintly flushed lips. For some inexplicable reason, it made my head feel just a little dizzy.
“Alright, it’s just a gala,” I thought.
Free food, free drinks, and it would all wrap up by ten–no harm done.
At least, that was what I told myself. Still, I was mentally prepared to work and maybe help Aaron dodge a few drinks or handle the inevitable small talk with people he’d have preferred to avoid.
But surprisingly, it was just an ordinary charity gala. Most people who approached Aaron only stopped by to greet him, while a few cast me looks that lingered a little too long.
Did I care? Not in the slightest.
By the end of the night, I hadn’t done a single bit of work. I drank two glasses of red wine, treated myself to a couple of mini cakes, and spent the evening enjoying the auction.
The items up for bidding were incredible–far more dazzling than anything I’d ever seen at a jewelry exhibition.
Clapping as a pair of ruby earrings went to some wealthy bidder, I realized this didn’t feel like overtime at all. It felt like I was on a mini vacation.
“What do you think of that one?”
Aaron’s voice suddenly broke through my thoughts.
I activated my work mode.
Finally, my existence here had a purpose!

Following his gaze, I spotted a delicate, heart–shaped brooch in a soft blush pink. The craftsmanship was exquisite, the kind of item that screamed luxury–the price tag alone could probably eat up my entire year’s salary.
“It’s lovely,” I said sincerely. “If you’re planning to gift it to a female relative or a friend, it’s a perfect choice.”
“Hmm.”
Aaron’s lips curved ever so slightly, and then he placed a bid, securing the brooch.
I never thought I’d experience overtime like this. If every shift were like tonight, I wouldn’t mind clocking in a little more often.
When the gala wrapped up, Aaron insisted on driving me back.
And when he opened the car door for me, I had to admit that I got a little scared.
I mean, seriously, were bosses this nice to their employees these days?
