Chapter 5
I watched Luke in the reception area through a one–way mirror.
It had been months since I last saw him, and he had lost quite a bit of weight. He was anxiously peering inside but couldn’t find
- me.
The receptionist was still absorbed in curiosity and tried to urge me to see him just as Jake came out of the meeting room.
He called out from a distance, “Amy, you should come listen to that case too.”
I hurriedly responded and walked toward him, flashing a polite smile at the receptionist.
Jake’s shout was timely. I didn’t want to cause a scene with Luke at the company, as it would affect my work.
The rest of the day was a blur of work, and I only punched out when the sky grew dark.
Jake and I were working on the same case, so we left the company together.
He asked, “Did you receive a bouquet today? Was it from the person looking for you?”
He was quick to notice the conflicted look on my face and

immediately guessed. “Luke?”

I sighed, “I didn’t expect him to follow me all the way abroad.”
Jake shook his head. “That’s tough. If you need anything, let me know. We’re fellow countrymen.”
I stepped out of the building, just about to thank him, when I locked eyes with Luke sitting on the steps.
He was about to put on a gentle expression but quickly lost it when he saw Jake.
He snapped, “You two are together again? Amy, we’re not divorced yet!”
Jake snorted, “Mr. Carter, do you have to freak out every time a man stands next to her?”
Luke glared at Jake and vented his anger at me.
He snapped, “I cut ties with Jessica for you. How could you treat me like this?”
I was confused. “How am I treating you badly? I’m just at work.
“If you can’t stand me interacting with men, you can go to City Hall, register for a divorce, and find someone who treats you like the world.”
Luke, seeing my indifferent expression, nearly burst into tears.

He stammered, “That’s not what I meant. Why are you bringing up divorce again? Don’t you understand why I came all the way abroad to find you?”
I shook my head.
He looked at me sadly. “Honey, I want to win you back.
“Life in a foreign land is hard. Come home with me.”
I looked at his sincere gaze as if he wanted to make up for the love he hadn’t given me in three years.
People were always like this. They didn’t cherish what they had until they lost them.
I used to yearn for his love, but when I gave up on him and moved on, he suddenly started to pour out his heart.
But what he did was nothing more than self–deception.
His real feelings were hard to tell.
I said, “I’m doing fine here. Don’t compare me to that fragile Jessica.
“Go. Don’t disturb my life.”
Luke grabbed me and insisted, “I won’t leave. We’re married. How could we be apart?”
Jake couldn’t stand it anymore and stepped forward to pull him

away.

Luke took a swing at his imaginary rival.
Jake dodged, knocked him over, and pulled me into his car.
He said, “Let’s go. Don’t waste time with him.”
I thanked him and asked him to take me home.
But this was only the beginning of the drama.
I later discovered that Luke had rented a place near my
apartment and was waiting for me every day as I came and went from work.
That night, I received a call from my mother.
She said, “I am worried about you, knowing how tough things are for you abroad.
“Luke promised me he would change, so I gave him your address. With him protecting you, I can rest easy.”
