Even though Martin was now in police custody, he had already arranged everything in advance.
The men surrounding me looked fearsome. They were even brandishing weapons. One of them tossed me an IOU agreement and declared, “If you owe a debt it’s only right to pay it back! This is what your husband borrowed from me with your house as collateral! Since he’s going to prison, you should pay it back on his behalf!”
He proceeded to eye me fiercely, but I was unperturbed. “If you think you can get the money by killing me out here on the street, you can go ahead and give it a shot.”
I’d already died once before. Death didn’t scare me!
Plus, I had just received an official commendation from the police force. There was no reason for these people to actually take my life.
Still, the man was stupefied by my fearlessness. He stretched his fingers and glanced behind him. Immediately, his lackeys started flexing their muscles and questioning me. “What do you mean by that? Are you expecting us to leave empty–handed?”
I tossed them the deed to the house and said, “You said he used the house as collateral, right? Here you go. You can have it.”
Patricia’s eyes widened in shock.
“Louise, you stupid bitch! You’re going to be the death of us all!” she shrieked. “Where are we supposed to live if you give them the house?”
She lunged forward to take the property deed back, but she couldn’t possibly win a fight against a group of strong middle–aged men. Soon, her struggle ended in defeat, and she walked away battered and bruised.
“What does that have to do with me?” I retorted.
Truth be told, I’d gotten the private investigators to look into this. Martin borrowed a ton of money before executing his plan to fake going to prison.
In my previous life, he and Whitney lived a life of luxury with that money, while I was forced to live from paycheck to paycheck as I raised Daniel and helped him pay off his debts.
Meanwhile, I was so overworked that my hair turned gray by the time I was in my 40s. My body had been so worn out that I became severely ill.
It went without saying that Patricia got a share of the money too.
Otherwise, knowing what she was like, she would’ve taken the deed to the house much earlier. She was banking on the fact that I wouldn’t give the house away, but alas, she was wrong about that!
With the help of the private investigators, I found the bank transactions that proved Martin’s debt had nothing to do with me. I even petitioned the court to look into Patricia’s records to prove that the money entered her pockets.
Therefore, Martin’s debt was completely unrelated to me. I wasn’t going to use my money to repay it on
