Elaine was genuinely terrified this time.
While I was too busy to deal with her after that incident, that didn’t mean I would just live with it without doing anything. Since she showed no remorse and even kept trying to flaunt herself in front of me to get my attention, I decided to fulfill her wish.
After all, I still kept a copy of the surveillance footage from that day.
Elaine hastily clutched Ian and begged, “Save me, Ian! I’m scared. I don’t want to go to prison. I only lied to you because I love you. It was a momentary lapse of judgment. You have to help me!”
Alas, Ian simply looked at me with regret and sorrow.
“I’ve made far too many mistakes. This time, I won’t hurt Belle again for your sake.”
Elaine wanted to plead with Cameron, but he cut her off, saying, “I thought you only made the foolish decision to leave Belle inside the cold storage because you were desperate to close the deal. But after investigating the matter, I found out that you’d purposely lured her into the cold storage and made sure the door was locked.

“I spoke to the people at the factory. No one would’ve gone to the cold storage that day. There was almost no chance of anyone hearing Belle’s cries for help. You’d planned everything out from the start. You wanted Belle to die.”
Cameron continued, “You lied to us, saying that the cold storage door was scheduled to open at fixed intervals. The truth is Belle would’ve died if someone in the security room hadn’t noticed that something was up.
“To think that we assumed she escaped on her own after the door unlocked by itself. Throughout the last two years, you’ve kept getting me to spend money on you. You also used Ian as a stepping stone to get ahead in your career. You care about nothing other than your own benefits. Do you really think I would still be fooled by you?”
Elaine slumped to the floor in defeat. As the police hauled her off, she threw malicious curses my way. Cameron reached out to cover my ears.
I looked at this fatigued face. The once–spirited young man now had a look of sadness and exhaustion. I pushed him away, and he smiled bitterly as he eyed his hands.
Ian tried to approach me, but Otis and his men surrounded him. Glancing at me with an insincere smile, Otis asked, “You won’t get involved if we deal with a company matter, right, Ms. Rowland?”
“Of course,” I replied with a smile.
I even handed Otis the document Ian had given me. Looking hurt at my utter betrayal, Ian asked, “Why are you doing this?”
My expression remained unchanged as I replied, “Because I no longer needed your protection. After all the times you abandoned me for Elaine’s sake, I learned that you’re someone who can’t shelter me from the storm forever. I’d need to learn how to be independent and face things alone.”
Even as Ian howled in anguish, I didn’t bother turning around, just like how he didn’t turn around when he abandoned me in the cold storage.
