Nobody was buying Jason’s story. Daniel adjusted his glasses, focusing on the masked figure in the first seat on the left who hadn’t spoken a word.
“Hey, you! With the most shares in the Heartland Chamber of Commerce board, you can’t be okay with a woman calling the shots, can you?” Daniel asked.
All eyes turned to Silas, who was casually scrolling on his phone with an attitude that matched the woman at the helm.
He slowly lifted his head, his voice rough and deliberate as he said, “Are you talking to me?” Even though his tone was casual, the ice in his eyes was clear as day, even with the mask hiding his face.
Daniel felt a chill but continued, “Who else would I be talking to?
Silas’s identity was a mystery; he didn’t even have a nickname. As the fifth member of the board, he held the majority of shares, yet no one knew how to address him properly.
Silas’s lips curled into a cold smile. “Do you even have the right to speak to me? If you weren’t here, I’d think some stray dog had wandered in and started barking.”
Daniel’s face fell. “You… You…”
“Do you have a stutter or what?” Silas cut him off before he could finish.
Daniel instinctively replied, “I… I…”
Joseph couldn’t help but laugh, surprised at how intimidating the mysterious director could be.
His laughter made Daniel realize he’d been played, but he couldn’t let the topic drift. Clenching his teeth, he said, “We’re discussing the Heartland Chamber of Commerce’s successor!”
Silas’s long, elegant fingers tapped aimlessly on the table, his voice a deep rumble that disguised his original tone. “I have no objections to this

Jason had been most worried that Silas would object, causing a clash with Lenore. The scene would be more than just a minor explosion. But Silas’s statement was unexpected, and Jason glanced at him in surprise.
Brody scanned the room, not quite believing Jason’s claim that the woman at the helm was the true founder of the Heartland Chamber of Commerce, but he trusted Jason’s choice for a successor. “I also have no objections to this successor,” he said.
Daniel disregarded Brody’s opinion. The most influential voice on the board belonged to Silas, who held a third of the shares. Daniel was certain Silas would object, but now, to his surprise, Silas said he had no objections. Daniel’s face darkened.
Ben’s face soured. “You can’t be fooled by Mr. Jason Chapin’s words, can you?” He thought anyone who believed that claim was a fool.
Silas turned slightly to face them, his deep voice giving the black mask an even more threatening vibe. “Because what he said is the truth.”
From the moment he heard the woman speak, he was certain the successor was Lenore. Jason’s earlier statement had taken him aback for a moment. But knowing Jason’s true identity and trusting that he wouldn’t lie, Silas accepted the fact.
