Chapter TwentyEight

Sometimes, you don’t realise how little decisions can change your entire life. Looking back now, I sometimes wonder how an insignificant decision could suddenly set your life down an entirely different path

It started from the moment Rachel and I arrived at the airport. As soon as we walked into the lounge, we noticed French couple arguing. Rachel immediately turned to face me, and we rolled our eyes. We sat as far away from them as possible, because we did not need to be a part of this drama

From what I could loosely tell from my abysmal French, the man had cheated on her with her friend, and she was breaking up with him after finding out just now. The boyfriend meanwhile was trying to plead with her and beg for her forgiveness, but she just wasn’t buying it

I’d hate to be them right now,Rachel said, glancing sideways at the couple. Imagine having to fly with a partner who you just figured out is cheating on you.”

He seems like an asshole,I said. I despise men who cheat.”

Amen, sister,Rachel sighed, before pulling out her book and burying her nose in it. I turned my attention to my phone, where Chris had just sent me a text, wishing me a safe flight. I smiled at the message, and quickly texted him back, before I looked up and saw the French lady walking towards me

Excuse me,she said, her English laced with a heavy French accent. I’m so sorry, but do you think it will be possible to switch seats with me? My boyfriend is being an asshole, and I can’t sit with him for the rest of the flight.”

Sure thing,I said, even though I didn’t like the idea of sitting next to a cheating asshole. But she looked like she was on the verge of tears, and I wanted to help her get away from him

Thank you so much, she said, handing me her ticket. It’s a window seat, so I hope you like it. But please don’t say anything to him. He’s packing out of my apartment as soon as we get to Paris.”

I offered her a smile, and as we exchanged tickets, I saw the boyfriend glaring at me. But I shrugged and turned my attention back to my phone, where Chris was talking about how we should plan something when I get back

Are you sure you want to get in the middle of that?Rache asked beside me

Not really, but if I can help her out, then why shouldn’t 1? I asked. Would you let her sit with that guy for the entire flight?”

Fair enough, she replied, before turning her attention back to her book

About half an hour later, we boarded the flight and I took the French girl’s seat. It was a window seat, and Rachel was only three rows behind me. I plugged in my AirPods and fully intended on blocking out the cheating boyfriend from my thoughts. I didn’t even look up when he was stashing away his carryon, and I kept my gaze fixed firmly out the window

I probably could have spent the entire flight without even looking at him. But some sort of invisible force made me look up. Maybe it was the way he smelled, a deep, earthy scent which shook me to the core. Or maybe it was just the way he towered over me as he stood there facing me. Maybe it was just the fact that I could feel him staring at me, and I was fully prepared to tell him off

But then I turned, and I gasped when I saw Marcus’s face staring back at me. My heart plummeted into the depths of my stomach, and I suddenly forgot how to breathe. His eyes were narrowed as he stared at me, the grey in his eyes shining so bright that he almost looked like he was wearing contacts. He was growing a light stubble, and I felt like my head was going to explode

But this couldn’t be Marcus. There were a few things off. He was way too tall, and a little bit more muscular than
