She tried to block Anita, but–bad move.
“Get lost! This is between me and your son!”
Anita shoved Cassandra aside with full force.
Thud.
Cassandra slammed into the wall. She clutched her shoulder, curling up in pain, too weak to fight back.
“This is outrageous! Someone call the police! That crazy woman is trying to kill my son! Why are you all just standing there? Call for=”
Before she could finish, her breath hitched–then she collapsed.
Two nurses rushed over, hauling her away.
I stayed hidden, watching as Deke and Anita stormed into his room, one after the other.
Just before stepping inside, Anita snatched an IV stand from the hallway.
Then–BANG!
The door slammed shut.
A crowd gathered.
I casually joined in.
“Hey, the door’s locked from the inside. We can’t open it!”
“That woman looks furious. Wonder what the guy did to piss her off?”
“What else? Probably played her.”
I chimed in, all casual. “She’s pregnant, but the kid isn’t his.”
Gasps rippled through the crowd. Eyes snapped to me.
I added, “The guy wanted a divorce so he could scam another woman’s savings. The wife found out.”

Chapter 9
Another wave of sharp intakes of breath.
Then, almost in unison–everyone spat toward the hospital room door.
“Ugh, sounds like a pair of scumbags.”
CRASH!
A loud bang erupted from inside.
Then a piercing scream.
Anita’s voice shrieked through the hallway.
“My stomach! My stomach hurts!”
I stood on tiptoes, peering through the small window.
Anita was sprawled on the floor, trembling.
Clutching her belly.
Struggling to unlock the door.
Her hands shook violently.
“Get a doctor! I’m bleeding!”
***
The door suddenly flew open.
Only then did I see–Anita’s dress was already soaked in blood.
The crowd recoiled, stepping back like blood was contagious.
I backed up too.
Anita clung to the doorframe, pale as death.
“Where are the doctors?! The nurses?! Are you all blind?!”
Medical staff rushed in, wheeling her away.
Minute by minute passed.
But Deke still hadn’t come out.
