My chest began to hurt again.
Honestly speaking, the Somerfield family treated me fairly.
They drove me out of the house, but gave me 100 thousand dollars.
It was only because of the 100 thousand dollars that James was willing to marry me.
Back then, the Somerfield family felt that he was too poor, so they forced Nova and James to split up.
They then married Nova to the son of a super–rich family.

After that, James found me, who was his university classmate.
It wasn’t a secret that I had feelings for James.
After all, he was tall, handsome, smart, and very good at basketball. A lot of girls liked him.
However, I had given up being in a relationship with him after I found out that he had a girlfriend.
Who would have known that things had turned out the way it was? His girlfriend, Nova Collins suddenly became the daughter of the Somerfield family.
As for me, the fake daughter, was driven out of the house.
James found me during the darkest days of my life.
Back then, I only wanted a home and he said that he could give me one and I believed him.
We then got married very quickly.
After we got married, I gave him the only 100 thousand dollars I had on me so that he could start his own business.
James was a smart man. It took him less than two years for his business to become quite successful.
All my classmates envied me and said that I married the right guy.
However, what they didn’t know was that James only married me to get revenge on me.
He said so himself when he was drunk.
To him, I was the one who took Nova’s life away from her.
If it weren’t for me, her parents wouldn’t have mistreated her and she wouldn’t have dumped him because he was
poor.
“Mom…” Laura’s voice brought me back to my senses and I lowered my head.
“What’s wrong, baby?”
“I want to go home.” Tears were welling up in Laura’s eyes and she was trying her best not to cry.
“Okay, let’s go home.” I picked Laura up in my arms and said, “I’m sorry, Mr. and Mrs. Somerfield, my daughter doesn’t feel well. I’ll be taking her home now. I’ll come visit you another day.”
Mrs. Somerfield looked at Mr. Somerfield and only smiled when she saw that he didn’t say anything.
“Since you’re already here, why don’t you grab a bite before you leave?”
“There’s no need. I need to take Laura to the hospital for an injection.” I made up an excuse to leave as soon as possible.
Mrs. Somerfield looked like she wanted to say something but didn’t know how to word it.
In the end, Jacob Somerfield, the second eldest son of the Somerfield family, chimed in, “Mom, Dad, since you don’t know how to say this, then let me be the bad guy.”
I furrowed my brows and didn’t know what they were getting at.
The next second, Jacob’s cold voice sounded in my ears. “Catherine, the doctors said that Brenda is becoming autistic. For the sake of the child’s health, I want you and James to get a divorce and allow James to be with Nova and Brenda. You know that he doesn’t love you anyway.”

My heart ached when I heard those words.
Before I was driven out of the family, I had quite a good relationship with Jacob.
He would always follow me around and took care of me.
When Nova came back, he seemed to have forgotten about this sister of his that he had taken care of for over 20 years overnight.
He had forgotten about me, but I didn’t forget about him.
Pretending to not know what Jacob was talking about, Nova opened her mouth as if she couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “Jacob, what are you talking about?”
I turned around slowly and looked at James with a meaningful smile. “You’re such a coward, James. You want a divorce and you don’t even dare mention it to me yourself?”
It was probably because James was now successful, the members of the Somerfield family were all quite protective over him.
Luke Somerfield, the eldest son of the Somerfield family, chimed in, “It’s nothing to do with James and Nova. This is a decision that we’ve reached after a discussion.”
“Well, who do you think you are, deciding my life for me?” I laughed angrily.
Thomas Somerfield, mine and Nova’s father, became infuriated after hearing my words. “Catherine, let me tell you who we think we are! We’ve raised you for over 20 years. Are we not allowed to request something from you?”
I found his words funny.
Just because they raised me, so I had to let another woman marry my husband, who was also the father of my child?
Their grandchild was sick and needed a father, what about my daughter? She would need a father as well.
Linda Somerfield, mine and Nova’s mother, looked at me with eyes full of disdain. “We can give you and your daughter a sum of money as compensation. Catherine, you’re still young and you can find another man. There’s no need to keep James by your side. He doesn’t love you, don’t you think it’s a little selfish to not divorce him?”
They could think I’m selfish all they want. I wasn’t going to divorce James for the sake of Laura. I was scared that Laura wouldn’t have a place to go when I die.
My biological parents died three years and I didn’t have any siblings either. I couldn’t really take Laura’s life when I die as well. 1
With James around, Laura could at least have the basic necessities to survive.
It didn’t matter if she wasn’t loved. Compared to survival, love didn’t seem that important at all.
