Laura wrapped her arms around Chris’s leg and began crying. “Uncle Chris, can you tell him to go away? I don’t like him.”
James was taken aback at first, but then he raised his hand and slapped Laura in the face.
“Who taught you to speak like that?”
The pain caused Laura to cry immediately.
I ran over from the side and was about to slap James, but Chris already landed a punch on his face.
“I did. You got a problem with that?”
I pulled Laura into my arms and glared at James. My chest was hurting so much that I couldn’t speak. Tears trickled down my face as silent complaints of what James just did.
I had never dared to hit Laura even once, who was James to hit my daughter?
Rory’s heart ached as well as she touched the handprint on Laura’s face. She then shouted, “James, what the fuck are you doing? Laura is your daughter, how could you slap her?”
The noise attracted the attention of people nearby.
Even the teachers of the nursery came over to prevent further violence.
Nova bowed and apologized, “Catherine, Mr. Shaw, Miss Lister, I’m so sorry. James is just worried about Brenda’s health and didn’t want her to cry so much.”
“How ridiculous!” Rory spoke up for me. “Is he a saint or what? He’s worried sick about someone else’s daughter and not his own? Does he even have a heart?”
James seemed to not have realized his mistake and was still looking at Laura with cold eyes.
A while later, I said through gnashed teeth, “Let’s get a divorce.”
I realized that I was wrong after seeing the handprint on Laura’s face. I thought a scumbag like James would at Heast take care of Laura a little after I die, because Laura was his daughter. 1

I was a fool to think that he would care about Laura just because she was his daughter.
He never loved her.
There was no reason and he didn’t need a reason.
They seemed to not have expected me to suggest a divorce under such circumstances.
Everyone looked at me with complicated looks on their faces.

Seeing that James breathed a sigh of relief, I laughed at myself. ‘He’s probably been waiting for this moment for a long time. Looks like I’ve been too stupid to not realize what he was thinking and stand by his side. I was just embarrassing myself.‘
Rory pulled on my arm and whispered, “Catherine, divorcing; this scumbag right now is making things easier for him.”

I looked at the clear handprint on Laura’s face and hatred arose in my heart. I had never expected that I would hate someone so much.
On the same evening, I went to talk to James about the divorce.
He was very generous as well. He gave me custody of Laura and half of his assets as well.
I didn’t say anything more than I needed to and just nodded at whatever he said.
The two of us then went to the home office on Monday morning.
Rory and Chris came as well.
With Chris around, everything was taken care of quite quickly.
I walked out of the home office with the divorce certificate in my hand and suddenly felt relieved.
I took a deep breath, raised my head and saw members of the Somerfield family getting out of a car.
“Have you gotten the divorce certificate, James?” asked Linda.
“I have.” James nodded.
“That’s great. You and Nova can now go get married. Jacob has booked a table at the Glory. We can go celebrate after you’ve gotten your marriage certificate with Nova.”
My chest began to ache again, but I still looked at James with disdain in my eyes.
He seemed to have very good time management skills.
The two of us had just gotten a divorce and he already couldn’t wait to get married to Nova and be Brenda’s -stepfather.
None of the Somerfield family cared about me and just urged James to get married to Nova.
However, Nova walked over to me and pretended to be concerned. “Catherine, although you and James are divorced, we’re still a family. You can come with us to the Glory afterwards for the celebration.”
I found her words hilarious. What was I going to celebrate? Was I going to celebrate my divorce or my ex–husband getting what he wanted and marrying his true love?
