We were through.
Her money was my money, and she had no right
to flaunt it like this.
I called a lawyer, drafted divorce papers, and
sent them to him. Just as I expected, the phone
rang, and he yelled at me.
I tried to hang up, but Tiffany grabbed the
phone. Her voice was sweet and innocent, like I

“Mark had a little too much to drink, and he
won’t leave me alone. Rainey, can you come get him?”
I could hear people laughing in the background.
He had alcohol allergies and a bad liver; he couldn’t be drinking like this.
I had no choice. I drove over to the house and
pushed open the door to find Mark standing in the middle of the room, slurring his words and
waving a beer.
“My Tiffany’s having a baby, and I’m the baby
daddy! Today, the drinks are on me!”
His buddies cheered, treating him like a god.
When they saw me, everyone shut up, looking
awkward.

I held out the divorce papers, but Mark didn’t even glance at them.
“Fifteen hundred dollars month is too much
for you to handle, I should be paying you even less! Do you really think you can divorce me?”
He burped, face red.
“Divorce me, and you’ll starve.”
I stared at the man in front of me, filled with
disappointment.
Before we got married, I made more money
than him, and I quit my job to raise his ego.
My love had made him blind.
“Be a man and sign the papers. Otherwise,
Tiffany’s kid will be a bastard, and you’ll have
that on your conscience forever.”

Tiffany’s face changed, and she almost
screamed at me, but she held back.
Mark’s face darkened.
He angrily grabbed the papers and signed his
name with a flourish.
“You think you can threaten me with my kid?
You’re crazy! One day, you’ll come crawling
back!”
I just smirked, tucking the papers into my purse.
Then I saw it. Mark’s skin was breaking out in a
rash, covered in red blotches.
He collapsed to the floor, out cold.
“I forgot to mention, he has a deadly alcohol
allergy.”
Tiffany shrieked, and the room erupted in

I calmly walked out, clutching the divorce
papers.
I heard Mark was rushed to the hospital,
fighting for his life.
Meanwhile, I was packing my bags.
It was a joke how little stuff I had in that apartment.

After packing up Princess and my clothes, I rented a sunny apartment and started looking for a job.
I gave up my old lifestyle to save Mark money.
Now it was time to live for myself.
Tiffany blew up my phone, demanding I come to
the hospital to be her personal maid.
My mother–in–law was also calling, screaming
about how I was being dramatic and should

have stopped Mark from drinking.
I blocked them all.
The next morning, I went to the office where I
had an interview. Because of my previous
experience, I got a job as a regional sales
manager.
If I could make a big sale in the first month, it
would be a great opportunity to get promoted.
I tossed out the frumpy clothes and started
taking care of myself like I used to.
I was getting along great with my new
coworkers.
But then, I saw Mark standing in front of the
display case.
He glared at me, checking me out with a sneer.

“Wow, I thought you’d be doing better than this, Rainey. Selling products? Really?”
Tiffany, now visibly pregnant, was dripping with contempt.
She was wearing designer clothes, looking like
a spoiled princess.
I wasn’t going to refuse the sale, so I started talking to her normally, completely ignoring the past.
My coworkers were shocked to hear about the affair.
Mark walked around, pointing out the most expensive products.
Just when I thought he was going to buy them
all, he said,
<
“Nevermind.”
The store manager was shocked.
