Nobody expected her to pull this crap.
“That skeezer is pregnant? That is low, even for
her!”
My mom was practically hyperventilating, so I
had to calm her down.
Six months flew by. I blocked all news about
those two.
Instead, I focused on my career and even got
my doctorate.
It’s a little sad now, but I’m proud of what I

I was killing it in my new job, and my salary was finally a reflection of my efforts.
Today I got off work early, and when I got
home, my mom was bursting with gossip.
“You won’t believe what happened to that little witch!”
I paused, putting down my grocery bag, and waited for her to spill the tea.
“Tiffany had a girl, and her mother–in–law is
going insane, saying the hospital switched her
baby! She’s even suing the doctors.”
“She called me the other day asking for money, what a joke.”
I was kind of shocked she had the nerve.
I’d seen a bunch of missed calls on my phone
yesterday; guess that was Tiffany, begging for
cash.
I just laughed and got back to work.
A couple days later, I found Tiffany on my
doorstep, holding a baby, looking gaunt. Still with the resting bitch face, though.
“Rainey, look at my baby girl! Isn’t she
precious?”
Then she fake–gasped, covering her mouth.
“Oops, I’m sorry! It’s so weird that you’re never
going to have kids!”
My mom glared at her.
Her words didn’t affect me; they were just
pathetic.
“You raised me for so long you may as well be
<
my mom too, and you should be paying for my
baby.”
Tiffany’s face dropped, and she swiped at my
mom’s purse, trying to grab it. I snatched it
back.
The baby started wailing, and she tried to cover
its mouth. Then she glared at me, ready to yell.
“Rainey! What the hell is wrong with you?!”
She was trying to push my buttons, but then
Mark showed up and ruined everything.
He ran towards us, yelling,
“What are you doing here? Get back in the car!”
Tiffany’s face crumbled, and she bit her lip.
Her perfect fantasy was over.

She gave him a flirty smile.
“You’re embarrassing me,” he snapped.

I didn’t want to deal with their BS anymore, so I
tried to drag my mom inside.
“Mark, control your woman. Don’t let her bother
us again.”
He stepped forward, grabbing my arm, looking
desperate.
“Rainey, please, can we talk?”
He had the nerve to look heartbroken.
I scoffed and pried his fingers off.
He cheated on me with my cousin. What was
there to discuss?

“I was out of my mind, you are the love of my
life.”
Gross.
“When I was sick, everyone avoided me, they were only looking out for themselves,” Mark
said, sounding pathetic.
“I knew if you were here, things would be
different.”
Most of the people in his life were just after his
money, and he didn’t have many real friends.
I would’ve helped him before.
“You reaped what you sowed.”
I shook my head, walking away.
Mark just stood there, surprised that I could be

I blocked his number but heard about him and
Tiffany from a friend.
Apparently, the baby had a congenital heart
defect. They were fighting, and no one noticed
the baby turning purple.
She almost died.
“Tiffany wouldn’t stop crying, she kept begging
to borrow money from me.”
My friend was practically giddy.
I rolled my eyes and filed papers.
I heard a coworker yell.
“There’s a crazy lady outside ranting about
ghosts in her house!”
Since the divorce, I had gotten a job as a real
