Samuel did see it.
The divorce papers had been tucked inside the carefully prepared gift she had left for him. She had said it was a surprise for him.
Had Isabella already made up her mind to leave him early on?
As he stood there, Jonathan calmly pulled out another copy of the document from the desk behind him and handed it over.
Noticing Samuel’s dark expression as though he was about to tear the paper again, Jonathan spoke in an even tone, “If you’re not tired of tearing them up, feel free to. I have a printer here. I can print as many copies of the agreement as you need, anytime.”
Samuel deflated like a wilted plant. His frustration mounted, and he ran his hands through his hair, trying to calm down. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have let my emotions get the best of me. But I can’t live without her… Please, can you tell me if… if she really went to the mountaintop?”
Jonathan shook his head. “I’m sorry. I’m only here to handle the divorce. I don’t know anything else.”
Samuel clung to the one thread of hope. “She’s still going through with the divorce, right? That means she’s still alive, isn’t it? If she were dead, she wouldn’t bother with this divorce, right?”
Jonathan chuckled dryly. “Those two things aren’t necessarily related. If you’ve hurt Ms. Jones deeply, she might prefer to die without carrying your surname.”
Samuel let out a bitter laugh, then slumped against the nearby sofa, drained of all strength. The divorce papers slipped from his hand and fell to the floor, but he didn’t make any move to pick it up. Jonathan didn’t mind. He calmly retrieved another copy of the documents and handed it over.
“Sign it,” Jonathan said. “Just consider it as fulfilling Ms. Jones’s last wish. Give her the freedom she asked for.”
He handed over a pen, indicating that Samuel could sign.
Samuel scoffed. “No matter how many copies of this divorce papers you print, I won’t sign. Not unless Bella comes to me in person. Our years together can’t be decided by a few pieces of paper. Whether she’s alive or dead, Bella will always be my wife!”
Jonathan was well–prepared and started explaining the legal process. “Mr. Grant, if a couple has been separated for over two years, divorce is automatic. Even if Ms. Jones is alive, you’ll still be divorced if you can’t find her within the next two years.”
Samuel was somewhat of a public figure. If news of this divorce spread, it would inevitably affect his company’s stock prices.
