I tightened my fists when I heard their words. My voice shook slightly as I said, “I’ll say it one last time, Julian. You killed our baby! It died because of you! You don’t get to talk about our child!”
I had lost my baby, but somehow, Vera seemed more broken up about it than I was.
Tears started welling up in her eyes as she whimpered, “I know you hate me, Kate, but you can’t just play around with a baby’s life! That was Jules‘ only kid. It’s your blood, too! How could you go through with the abortion?
“I’ve already told you that I’m not holding what happened against you. I don’t even need an apology. I just need you to set your pride aside so that we can move on. Why do you have to be so stubborn? That was a real person, you know!”
I scoffed at how shameless Vera was being. “Shut up! My kid’s none of your damn business. You think that nobody knows what you did that day, huh? You can’t hide it. You know better than I do what really happened to my baby!”
Julian stormed over and slapped me hard across the face. “Enough! I thought you were just jealous, Kate. I never imagined you’d be this stubborn and unapologetic! Vera almost died because of you! How can you question her?
“None of this would’ve happened if you hadn’t jerked the wheel that day. How was I supposed to know if you were really hurt or just faking it? And now you’re blaming me for losing the baby?
You brought all this on yourself with all your drama! Didn’t you ever hear of the boy who cried wolf? You’re getting exactly what you deserve!”
