Vera wore a smug, taunting look. “You’ve already lost, Kate Even if you get pregnant, you’ll never beat me. I’m the one Jules really cares about.”
I couldn’t care less about her. All I could think about was getting to the police and having her arrested. But she wasn’t done yet. She grabbed my arm.
“How about one last game? That way, you’ll really know that you’ve lost when it’s over.”
I frowned, feeling uneasy. “I’ve already divorced Julian like you wanted. What more do you want from me?”
Her eyes shifted to something behind me. The next thing I knew, she tripped and tumbled down the stairs, hitting every step before crashing into the wall and finally stopping
“Vera!” Julian yelled from behind me.
I quickly stepped aside, avoiding him this time.
He rushed over to scoop her up in his arms, shooting me a glare full of pure hatred. “Haven’t you learned anything after losing a child, Kate? Why can’t you just move on? What more must I do to get you to leave me alone?
“I already agreed to the divorce. What else do you want? Why can’t you stop messing with Vera? I’ve told you a hundred times. She’s innocent!”
I couldn’t help but scoff at how he was making me out to be the bad guy.
