“I already agreed to the divorce. What else do you want? Why can’t you stop messing with Vera? I’ve told you a hundred times. She’s innocent!”
I couldn’t help but scoff at how he was making me out to be the bad guy.
“Leave you alone? Stop being delusional. I’d be more than happy to never deal with you again! Don’t go blaming me for all of Vera’s drama. Are you going to blame me if something goes wrong during her childbirth, too?”
Julian looked like he was about to snap back, but Vera grabbed his arm. Her voice was barely above a whisper as she said, “Jules, don’t take it out on Kate. She’s just lost a child and went through a divorce. She’s hurting. This is my fault.
“I shouldn’t have been standing at the top of the stairs… Please don’t fight with her. You’ve already divorced because of me. Don’t let me be the reason you two fall apart ”
Julian’s eyes welled up with tears as he gently touched the cut on her forehead. “It’s my fault. I should’ve kept you safe. I let that bitch hurt you again!”
He spun around to face me, his glare sharp enough to cut through me. “Kate, apologize to Vera! I’m giving you one last warning! Don’t make this harder for her. If you’ve got a problem, take it up with me!”
I sneered and crossed my arms. “Take it up with you? Oh, so now you’re the knight in shining armor, huh? There were no cameras on that road the day of the accident, but the courthouse has plenty. If you want to know the real story behind how she fell down those stairs, just check the footage.
“And honestly, Julian, get over yourself. Do you think I’d fight over you? You’re disgusting! Stay together forever, you sick pair, so I don’t have to keep seeing your nasty faces!”
I was about to leave when Julian lunged forward and blocked my way. His eyes were practically burning with hatred as he snapped, “Kate, this is the last time I’m telling you–apologize to Vera for the accident and everything that happened today. Don’t push me!”
I shot him a cold look and fired back, “And I’m telling you for the last time–I’m not apologizing. Maybe I’d think about it if she was on her knees at my kid’s grave begging for forgiveness!”
As soon as I finished speaking, Julian slapped me across the face. The sound of it rang in the air. I felt blood start to trickle from the corner of my
mouth.

Chapter 7
Before I could say anything, he yanked a handful of my hair and, with one harsh shove, sent me tumbling down the same stairs Vera had just fallen down.
