I finally saw Julian for who he truly was. I was infuriated. I shot him a furious look and snapped, “Are you really still taking her side, Julian? Your son–your own flesh and blood–died in that crash! What the hell is wrong with you?”
“Alright, everyone. Take it easy,” a police officer said. “We will make a fair judgment based on the evidence and the investigation. No one’s getting out of this.”
We hung around at the station, waiting for updates, while Vera kept trying to justify herself about the accident.
“The traffic was insane that day. I panicked, and everything just spiraled out of control. But I swear, I never meant to hurt Kate. Please, you have to believe me. It wasn’t on purpose. I could barely even think straight. I was so scared, and I almost broke down…”
Julian frowned and looked at her with genuine concern. “I know you’ve got a good heart. You’d never do something like this. Don’t worry. The police are already checking the traffic cameras. They’ll clear your name.”
I couldn’t hide my disgust as I watched them. Even now, Julian was still stuck in his own world, blinded by the real culprit. I couldn’t help but beat myself up for taking so long to see who he really was. It had cost my kid and me everything.
Soon enough, the police started asking more questions. They wanted to know why I hadn’t reported anything
sooner.
