Chapter 15

Steven called Yvonne countless times, but the moment the conversation strayed from the topic of divorce, she would hang up immediately.
On his last attempt, he pleaded in a low voice, “I’ll sign the divorce papers. But I just want to see you one last time, Yvonne. Consider it closure for what we once had. I’ll be waiting for you at home.”
Yvonne returned. But as soon as she stepped inside, she saw that Steven had gathered all their mutual friends at the house. He was hoping they would persuade her to stay.
Yvonne frowned slightly, a trace of displeasure flashing in her eyes. The atmosphere in the room was awkward–everyone exchanged glances, unsure of what to say.
Before anyone could speak, Yvonne said, “Guys, only the one in the marriage really knows what’s going on. Steven has been cheating for three years. Did any of you ever try to stop him? And now you want to persuade me not to divorce?
“A single mistake can sometimes be forgiven, but after three years of betrayal, what is there left to salvage?”
As soon as she finished speaking, the room fell silent.
One of Steven’s friends patted him on the shoulder and sighed. “Sorry, man. I really can’t say anything to defend you. You brought this on yourself.”
The others nodded in agreement. Their gazes toward Steven carried a mix of sympathy, reproach, and helplessness.
One by one, they left. Soon, only Steven and Yvonne remained in the room.
Yvonne’s gaze was frosty as she looked at him. “Are you signing or not?”
Steven’s body trembled slightly. With a sudden thud, he dropped to his knees in front of her, his eyes filled with remorse. He said, “I know I was terribly wrong. I don’t expect you to forgive me right away, but… I can’t lose you.
“I was blinded by my own foolishness for the past three years. Every single day recently, I’ve been drowning in regret, I…” Yvonne scoffed. “Steven, three years ago, I felt the same pain you’re feeling now. But that didn’t stop you from hurting me over and over again. I endured that pain for three years, and yet you can’t even handle a few days of it?”
Steven lowered his head, at a complete loss for words.
Each betrayal of his had been like a nail driven into the wall of their marriage. Now, that wall was riddled with holes, barely standing.
“Yvonne, I’m sorry… I’m so sorry…” Suddenly, he raised his hand and started slapping his own face. With each strike, he choked out another apology.
Yvonne watched his pitiful display, but her heart remained unmoved. The love she once had for him had been completely worn away by years of suffering.
“Sign the papers soon. This is the last time I will see you. I’m giving you three more days–my lawyer will contact you then.” With that, Yvonne turned and walked toward the door.
Steven scrambled forward on his knees, clutching her legs as he sobbed. “I won’t get a divorce. Yvor married, you can punish me however you want.”
s long as we stay
Yvonne stopped in her tracks and looked down at Steven, her gaze ice–cold. “Steven, do you think this is still a game where you can negotiate? You have no right to set conditions.”

But Steven just held on to Yvonne tightly, refusing to let go no matter what. “Don’t leave, Yvonne. Honey, please, don’t go-”
Before he could finish, a sharp kick sent him sprawling. Instinctively, he loosened his grip and looked up, only to see Reid standing beside Yvonne, his face dark with anger.
“Reid?” Steven was stunned.
Reid was livid. He rolled up his sleeves and was about to step forward when Yvonne quickly stopped him. “Mr. Simmons, thank you. But this is between us. Please don’t interfere.”
Reid hesitated for a moment, narrowing his eyes at her before turning to Steven. “What are you doing? She’s just a woman. If she wants to leave, let her. Don’t be so pathetic.”
Yvonne turned and walked away.
“Yvonne!” Steven tried to chase after her, but Reid blocked his path.
“That’s enough! Stop making a fuss–it’s not that big of a deal,” Reid said.
Steven watched as Yvonne walked farther and farther away, his eyes filled with panic and desperation. With a sudden burst of strength, he shoved Reid’s hand away so hard that Reid stumbled back.
“What the hell do you know? She’s not just any woman–she’s the love of my life!” Steven roared, his voice thick with an anger he had never felt before. His eyes were bloodshot, burning with unrestrained fury.
Reid sneered before swinging a punch that sent Steven crashing to the ground. Grabbing him by the collar, he cursed furiously, “You son of a bitch, didn’t you already push her away?”
Yvonne couldn’t hail a taxi right away, so she ended up walking alone for a long time. Since the car accident that had never driven again.

She was wearing high heels today, and after a while, her heels started to ache. She took off her shoes to check and saw that her feet had already been rubbed raw and were bleeding.
Therefore, she simply carried her shoes in her hand, walking barefoot, step by step, feeling the ground beneath her.
Wesley was driving by and spotted Yvonne from a distance, walking barefoot and carrying her shoes. He took a second look and suddenly remembered that she was the poor woman he had encountered in the hospital last time.
After driving past her, he made a U–turn and pulled up beside Yvonne, slowing down his car. He rolled down the window and leaned out, asking, “Do you need help?”
Yvonne paused, looked up, and saw Wesley’s mature and composed face with a hint of detachment. “Dr. Godfrey?”
Wesley was a bit surprised that she remembered him. “Where are you headed? I’ll give you a ride.”
Yvonne thought for a moment. Her feet were hurting, and it was clear that continuing on foot would only make things worse for her. Thus, without hesitation, she opened the car door and got in.
“Thanks,” she said to Wesley.
“Address.” Wesley’s voice was nonchalant.
Yvonne gave him a location.
Wesley nodded and added, “30 dollars.”

“What?” Yvonne was a bit confused.
“Fare, Wesley clarified.
Yvonne was taken aback. She glanced at the car’s logo, recognizing it as a BMW X6. Wesley didn’t seem like someone who needed the money.
But he had helped her, after all. So she took out her phone and said, “I don’t have cash. I’ll transfer it to you.”
Wesley furrowed his brow and, while waiting at a red light, opened the PayPal app and handed his phone to Yvonne. Yvonne was a bit surprised; it felt like he was trying to hide his WhatsApp account from her.
She transferred the money to him.
Wesley was a man of few words, and he drove in silence the entire way. The atmosphere inside the car was somewhat awkward. Yvonne didn’t feel like talking either, only occasionally glancing out the window.
The car moved smoothly and soon arrived at the place Yvonne had specified. Wesley parked the car and still didn’t say anything extra.
Yvonne unbuckled her seatbelt, murmured a quiet “Thanks,” and reached for the door handle to get out.
“Wait,” Wesley called out, rummaging through a drawer in the car and pulling out two band–aids, which he handed to her. “1 dollar.”
Yvonne looked at the band–aids, then at him, but in the end, she took them and transferred 1 dollar to him.
As soon as she closed the car door, Wesley drove off.
Yvonne stood there, watching the car disappear into the distance, feeling a bit thoughtful. She found Wesley quite interesting.
