Chapter 12 Proving Herself
Katie had been trying to reassure herself not to let it bother her.

Sally could only resort to these tricks, even bringing Melvin to school. The likely outcome would be that her grades would be canceled.
But when she heard Ryan ask about the grades, she couldn’t stop herself from feeling upset.
Just as Katic was about to respond, someone beside her called out, “Katie, Mr. James wants you to
come to the oflice.”
She heard this and pressed her lips together, saying, I’ll go to the office first. We’ll talk later.”
After ending the call, she headed straight to the teacher’s office.
When she walked in, she found Melvin was there too, and the atmosphere wasn’t great.
Melvin spoke coldly, “Katie, I didn’t expect you to cheat on the exam just to win. Do you understand what that means?”
Katie wasn’t shocked. She had expected Melvin wouldn’t believe her.
Her eyes were sharp and clear, “I didn’t cheat.”
But she refused to admit to something she hadn’t done.
“Katie, the evidence is right in front of you, and you’re still lying? Based on your usual grades and your behavior at home, there’s no way your scores could have improved this much. You had. plenty of motives to cheat! Just admit your mistake and try to get the school to give you a warning instead of something worse.”
Katie sneered. “Do you really think this is enough proof that I cheated?”
Melvin stood up in anger, “Katie, look at what

When James saw Melvin about to lose control, they quickly intervened, “Calm down and talk to her properly.”
Melvin, clearly frustrated, said to James, “Sorry, Katic cheated because she was rebelling against the family. Just have her write an apology letter and apologize publicly in front of the entire school, and let’s avoid any formal punishment.”
James sighed. “That could work. Hopefully, Katie will learn from this.”
After all, with graduation so close, having a punishment on her record wouldn’t look good.
Katie glanced down at the floor, her heart, already cold, sinking even further.

“Katie, you’ve completely disgraced the Maddisons. How could I have a sister like you? Just thinking about it makes me embarrassed!”
“You think I want to be your sister?”
Katie’s features were delicate, her gaze dark and cold.
She didn’t care anymore.
“Katie, say that again if you dare.”
Melvin’s face was dark with anger as he glared at her.
“As a brother, you shouldn’t be so harsh, it might scare her.”
An elderly man walked in, his face kind and gentle. It was the principal.
James quickly said, “Sir, what brings you here?”

“I heard a senior student made a big improvement, but there are accusations of cheating, and it’s causing quite a commotion. I came to see what’s going on.”
Melvin snapped, “There’s no need for an investigation. Katie only got those good grades by cheating. If she won’t apologize and admit her mistake, just punish her.”
It was obvious that Katie needed to learn a lesson.
He had just begged the teacher, saying all sorts of good things to prevent Katie from being punished, but now she was refusing.
Fine, he wouldn’t bother doing anything for her anymore.
After all, she didn’t care.
The principal looked at Katie with a gentle expression. “There’s actually a simple way to confirm whether you cheated. We can give you a new set of questions and have you complete them under our supervision. Are you willing to take the test?”
Katie looked at the principal, “I accept, but I have one condition. If it’s proven that I didn’t cheat, the person who accused me should publicly apologize.”
Melvin sneered. “Fine, let’s see your score!”
Soon, James handed Katie a test paper. “I’ll start the timer now.”
Katie sat down, took the pen, and began working on the test.
The office was silent, with everyone watching Katie closely.
James stood closest to her, and as he saw Katie solving the math problems, he was taken aback.

Sally, curious about what was happening in the office, walked over and saw Katie working on the test. A bad feeling immediately washed over her.
She walked right up to Melvin. “Melvin, what’s happening? Is Katie retaking the test?”
Melvin scoffed. “That’s right. She won’t admit to cheating, so we’re making sure she’s completely convinced she’s wrong.
Sally walked over to Katie. “Don’t be so stubborn. We all believe in you. You don’t have to push yourself this hard.”
Katie didn’t respond or pay attention to Sally. She wasn’t going to let that woman disrupt her focus.
Seeing that Katie was unaffected, Sally bit her lip and turned to Melvin. “Katie is still mad at me.”
Melvin, growing irritated, said, “Katie, Sally is talking to you. Are you ignoring her?”
Katie looked up briefly. “I’m doing the test. Can’t you see that?”
Melvin was caught off guard. “Sally’s giving you an out, and you still won’t take it? You’d better watch out or you’ll embarrass yourself!”
“Sally, please don’t disturb Katie. Let her finish the test first, and we can discuss it afterward.”
James could no longer stay silent. He had seen Katie doing well on the test, and it was clear that she likely hadn’t cheated.
Sally, feeling a bit resentful, feigned innocence. I didn’t mean anything, sir.
But she just couldn’t accept Katie proving her so–called strength.
Sally couldn’t handle the thought of Katie being better than her, and she wouldn’t allow it to happen.
She stood to the side, watching, and couldn’t help but doubt. Katie probably wouldn’t get a good score, right?
Yet, seeing the changes in Katie lately, she felt an uneasy discomfort growing inside her.
The exam time ended.
James quickly took the test papers and, along with other teachers, began grading them.
Katie sat in her chair, feeling unusually calm.
Even seeing Sally standing next to Melvin, she didn’t feel much of an emotional reaction.

James spoke excitedly. “The results are out.”

Sally looked over, her heart filled with malice, secretly hoping Katie would fail miserably.
Melvin said coldly, “If her score is bad, just keep quiet. It’ll be embarrassing”
“No, Katie did very well! In fact, this set of questions was even more difficult than the monthly exam, and her score is higher than before!”
When Katie heard the result, the tension in her chest finally eased.
She pressed her lips together, a small smile creeping onto her face.
Melvin’s expression faltered. He grabbed the test paper and glanced at it. The score didn’t lie.
Katie did it well.
Sally, standing on tiptoe to catch a glimpse of the test score, was immediately consumed by jealousy. When did Katie become so impressive?
This can’t be true!
The old principal smiled with satisfaction and said, “The truth is now clear. Katie has achieved this progress through her own hard work.”
James nodded. “Katie indeed has been working hard recently.”
Melvin’s expression shifted like a color palette, changing from one emotion to the next, before he finally placed the test paper back on the desk. He was shocked Katie didn’t cheat.
At that moment, he suddenly found Katie standing before him unfamiliar.
The principal cleared his throat and said, “Now that the truth is clear, the person who falsely accused Katie should apologize.
Sally’s face quickly turned awkward.
