Chapter 44 Did We Come Here Just to Buy Her a Corn?
It was Flint and Steven.

The two of them quickly faded from view, and Lisa hesitated for a moment before reluctantly looking away. About ten minutes later, the elevator chimed softly, drawing Bernard’s attention. “M–Mr. Hale?!”
“Mm.” Flint’s eyes briefly scanned the hallway, his gaze pausing on Lisa for a few seconds before he added, “I heard Mr. Mario is unwell, so I came to check on him.”
Steven, no longer wearing his usual playful smile, handed over a fruit basket and some gifts. His expression was almost serious as he said, “Just a little something from our boss.”
Bernard was taken aback and was left speechless.
He had heard that Flint hadn’t even bothered to visit his own father when he was on his deathbed, so the idea of him coming to the hospital to visit Mario was almost beyond belief.
“Y–you’re too kind, Mr. Hale,” Bernard stammered. “Actually, Mario isn’t in any immediate danger. Would you like me to show you to his room?”

“There’s no need,” Flint replied, “I don’t want to disturb him while he’s resting.”
Bernard was completely confused.
He came all this way just to deliver a basket of fruit and supplements, and now he’s leaving without even seeing Mario?
As Flint stepped into the elevator, Bernard quickly called out, “Lisa! Please, see Mr. Hale out!”
Although Bernard didn’t fully understand Flint’s reasons for being there, he wasn’t about to let an opportunity slip by.
He felt that having Lisa spend time with Flint wouldn’t be such a bad thing. After all, Flint wasn’t some overweight, aging man -his looks alone were enough to make countless young women eager to get close to him, not to mention his prominent family background and immense influence.
And if Lisa caught Flint’s attention, the benefits would be enormous.
Though Lisa didn’t seem thrilled, Bernard thought that with just a little more exposure, she might begin to warm to the idea. Lisa furrowed her brows, but with Bernard’s subtle insistence, she reluctantly followed Flint into the elevator.
As soon as the doors closed, Steven returned to his usual carefree attitude. “What’s going on with you? You look a little pale. Have you been getting enough sleep?”
Lisa was speechless.
It’s not about that. Seeing Flint just reminds me of that wrinkled, ruined dress.
She believed that when someone gave you a gift, whether out of kindness or obligation, it should be treated with care, especially when it was something expensive.
Lisa fidgeted with her fingers nervously and spoke softly, “I’m sorry, Mr. Hale.”
“What for?” Flint asked, his voice softening.
“The dress you gave me …*
Flint’s expression softened a little. “If I gave it to you, it’s yours now. How you choose to handle it is entirely up to you. There’s no need to apologize.”
Lisa let out a quiet sigh of relief.

The elevator dinged, signaling that they had reached the first floor. Since Lisa hadn’t been involved in the Olsens‘ business dealings, she wasn’t sure of the proper etiquette for seeing someone off. So, she simply followed Flint toward the exit. As they reached the door, someone outside was selling roasted corn, and Steven asked, “Want some?”
Lisa glanced at the golden–brown, slightly charred corn and swallowed quietly before shaking her head. “No, thank you.”
Steven came back quickly, holding two pieces of corn and handing one to Lisa.
“It’s really okay…” Lisa tried to decline.
“It’s not like I’m paying for it.” Steven smirked, taking a bite of the hot, fragrant corn. He nodded toward the side. “The boss is paying for it. Come on. Eat it. It’s free.”
Lisa held the corn in her hands, her gaze drifting toward Flint, dazed. It seemed like every time she ran into Flint, she ended up being fed.
Flint, clearly a man of importance, didn’t linger. He quickly got into his Cullinan. Only after the car had driven away did Lisa finally take a bite of the roasted corn.
It tasted just as she remembered.
Wanda had a slight mental condition, apparently caused by a high fever in childhood that left her brain damaged. After that, both of her parents died, and her siblings abandoned her. She ended up living alone in a run–down house in the village. Fortunately, she had some basic life skills and managed to scrape by.
But “scraping by” was about all she had done. If there had been even one more mouth to feed, they would have gone hungry.
The villagers often said she was a foolish woman. Even though she was barely getting by, she had taken in an orphaned child to care for. Not only did she look after the child, but she made sure Lisa went to school, even selling everything she owned to pay for her tuition.
That was why Lisa had grown up eating simple, basic food. And now, as she reflected on those hard days spent around a fire with Wanda, eating roasted corn, she felt an unexpected sense of nostalgia.
“Boss, did we come here just to buy her a corn cob?” Steven leaned against the car window, munching on his corn while watching Lisa’s slim figure grow smaller in the distance. “There aren’t any Michelin–starred seafood places around here, but we could’ve at least bought her a proper dinner.”
Flint leaned back in the car’s seat, his face unreadable. “If we did that, she’d run away the next time she saw me.”
