Tiffany felt surprisingly upbeat as she stood up, smiling. “It’s fine, Greta. You can clear everything away now.”
She moved toward her room with a leisurely pace, taking each step slowly and calmly.
Greta couldn’t help but feel uneasy. Tiffany’s behavior suggested that something was brewing behind her cool exterior–most likely something that would cause trouble.
That day, Maggie was out at an engagement party for a friend’s son, and Bernard was busy with work. The rest of the family had their own plans as well. So, Tiffany was the one who was going to pick up Mario from the hospital.
However, with Wilfrid helping out with everything, Tiffany’s main job that day was to simply keep Mario company. She and Mario got into the car, and Tiffany casually mentioned, “I need to drop something off for my classmate’s sister. We’re going to take a detour.”
Mario looked at her, clearly confused. “What?”
Tiffany waved the notebook she had in her hand. “She was in such a hurry to get to school that she forgot her homework. You know how it goes–if you forget it, it means you never did it. If I don’t drop it off, her teacher’s going to punish her.”
Mario raised an eyebrow. “Alright. Which school?”
“Kearney Middle School.”
Mario’s brow furrowed. “Kearney Middle School? Isn’t that near Kensington University?”
“Yep,” Tiffany replied. “Lisa goes to Kensington University. You remember picking her up from there once, right? By the way, do you know what she’s studying? I have no idea.”
Mario hesitated.
Because, in truth, he didn’t know.
As the eldest in the family, Mario was someone who prided himself on knowing everything about his siblings–what they studied, where they worked, and all the important details. He should’ve known these things.
But when Tiffany asked, he realized how little he knew about Lisa’s life. He didn’t even know what year she was in or what her major was.

Growing up around her, he had never pictured Lisa as the academic type. The fact that she had made it into one of the top universities in the country caught him off guard.
Noticing Mario’s troubled look, Tiffany hesitated, asking, “Mario, did I say something wrong?”
“No.” Mario closed his eyes briefly. “It’s my fault.”
It hit him then–he hadn’t been paying enough attention to Lisa’s life, and it had probably led to her acting out.
With the weekend approaching and Mario being home, it seemed like the perfect time to have a serious talk with her.
“Driver, stop up ahead!” Tiffany called out. “Wait here. I’ll be back in no time!”
It was just past 4:00 p.m., and the school gates were still quiet, with no students in sight. Only a few food vendors were setting up for the end–of–day rush.
Mario’s eyes scanned the street food stands, his gaze detached and uninterested.
He never ate that kind of food, and he certainly wouldn’t let anyone in his family do so. To him, those snacks were little better than poison.

Lisa, working quickly with gloved hands, was making sausages. She threaded sausages onto skewers, carefully preparing them
for customers.
“This should be a good day for business,” Mona said, glancing around. “A lot of regulars from yesterday said they’re coming back to buy more for home.”
Lisa nodded, her focus on the task at hand. “If that’s the case, we’ll sell out even faster. By the way, I’m not coming over for dinner tonight.”
“Why not?” Mona asked, surprised.
Lisa finished putting the last sausage into the storage basket and replied, “I told you, Mario’s coming home today, so—”
Before she could finish, someone slapped the basket from her hands. Sausages tumbled to the ground, and Mona gasped, “What are you doing?!”
“Lisa.” Mario’s voice was ice cold, his stare sharp and piercing. He stood there, his eyes fixed on her, his face filled with fury. “What are you doing?”
Lisa froze, stunned and completely caught off guard.

“I’m asking you a question.” Mario’s voice was even colder now.” “What
you doing? Is this your idea of an internship?”
Lisa trembled, memories flooding her mind–back to that time Mario had dragged her out of a tutoring session, angry and humiliated.
He’d been embarrassed by something as simple as tutoring, and now, here she was, caught in the act of selling sausages outside a school. Mario must have been ready to strangle her on the spot.
“Wh–what…” Mona stammered, clearly intimidated by Mario’s presence. Still, she stepped forward and positioned herself protectively in front of Lisa. “What’s your deal? Coming in here and ruining our business? Just because you’re tall doesn’t mean you’re important. Want me to call the cops?”
Quickly, Lisa grabbed Mona’s arm, whispering urgently, “Mona, stop, please!”
