Shana and Jocelyn walked down the long, dimly lit hallway of the basement. Shana, always friendly and warm–hearted, greeted everyour they passed. Shana, are you heading out?
Shana introduced the people to Jocelyn. “This is Mrs, Watson, and this is Ms. Louisa”
Jocelyn smiled and greeted each of them politely.
“Shana, is this young lady your niece?” Lousa asked.
Shana beamed. “No, Louisa, this is my daughter, Jocelyn”
“Wow! She’s stunning! Shana, you’re really lucky!”
As they walked away, the whispers started.
“Shana’s real daughter is gorgeous! She looks just like Shana!”
“She is pretty, but what a shame. She’s just an unwanted bestand.”
“I wonder what Shana was thinking. A beauty like that could have married anyone. Why stay with a man who’s not even hers? Now, she has nothing and lives down here.”
what else would a woman like that deserve? She broke up a family, and now she’s stuck in a basement,”
“Serves her right
Soon, Shana led Jocelyn to the small barbecue restaurant where she worked.
The owner, a sharp middle–aged woman named Helga Stuart, didn’t seem pleased when Shana explained she wanted to quit.
“It’s the busiest time of the year? You’re telling me you’re quitting now? Where am I supposed to find someone to replace you
on such short notice?”
Shana looked apologetically at her boss. “Please, I’m sorry, can you make an exception for me?”
“Tm running a business here, not a charity!” Helga snapped. “If every employee acted like this, I’d be out of business! If you want to quit, at least give me a month’s notice. But now you just want to leave? And I have no time to find someone to replace you. You’ll lose a whole month’s pay over this!
Hearing that. Shana hesitated. Then I’ll stay.”
Losing a whole month’s salary was too much for her to bear,
Jocelyn, however, stepped forward and addressed Helga. “Mrs. Stuart, my mom’s health is really bad, and she needs time to recover: How about 1 take over her shifts for a month? That should give you time to find someone else. Would that work for you?”
Helga gave Jocelyn a skeptical look, taking her in. “You?”
Jocelyn didn’t look strong enough for such a physically demanding job, “This isn’t something a delicate person like you could
handle”
Shana tugged gently on Jocelyn’s arm. “Maybe it’s better to let the money go, Jocelyn….
But Jocelyn gave a calm smile and turned to Helga. “Mrs. Stuart, let me at least try. If I can’t manage, then you can fire me.
Though a month’s salary wasn’t much, Jocelyn knew it was hard–earned by her mother. She didn’t want that to go to waste,
Helga let out a short laugh. Fine, since you’re so eager to help your mom, Ell give you a shot. But if you can’t do the job, you’re ou no second chances.”
