Chapter 15 How Revolting
The Moores were torn. How could they ever allow their daughter to marry into a family like the Quades, especially when they were on the verge of collapse?
Yet, if they called off the engagement now, what would the people of Cloudhaven think of the Moores? The situation was a delicate one
As the couple sat silently, Ruby entered, noticing the tension in the air. “Mom, Dad, what’s going on? Why the serious faces?”
Rebecca sighed, then quickly explained the dilemma to Ruby.
Ruby, with the wisdom of someone who had lived before, remembered how the Quades had returned to Cloudhaven just before their financial ruin in her past life. Given their situation now, their return made sense.
She frowned slightly. “What the Quades are trying to do is like a frog trying to marry a princess.”
And she wasn’t even a princess.

“Exactly!” Rebecca exclaimed. “After all these years, they still have the nerve to think they can marry my daughter! Don’t they know their place? It’s outrageous!”
Ruby nodded, her voice calm but unwavering. “Mom, Dad, don’t worry about this. I’ll handle it. You don’t need to be involved. It’s the 21st century. People are free to choose whom they marry. Whatever happens from here on out, it won’t be your responsibility.”
In this life, with her abilities, she would either stay single or marry someone truly worthy of her.
I have every intention of marrying someone at the top of society–someone like Mr. Caleb.
Cloudhaven is far too small to trap her.
And the fifil son of the Quades? He doesn’t even come close to Mr. Caleb’s level.
If the Quade guy was anywhere near as important as Mr. Caleb, the Quades, wouldn’t be on the brink of ruin, trying to use marriage 10 salvage their situation.
I have already checked. The person who appeared at the Moores banquet last night was most likely Mr. Caleb
I have to get close to him–I can’t let my past mistakes repeat themselves.
Just then, the butler rushed in. “Mr. and Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Myrtle and Mrs. Teresa have arrived.”
“Please, show them in, Drake said, offering a smile while his thoughts were elsewhere.
In moments, two women entered the living room
Leading the way was Myrtle Quade, an elderly woman with white hair and deep wrinkles. Behind her, walking with grace, was Teresa Quade, Caleb’s mother, who appeared far younger than her age.
Drake quickly approached to greet them.
Mrs. Myrtle, Teresa, when did you arrive in Cloudhaven? You should’ve let us know earlier so we could have properly prepared.” Drake said, though his mind was filled with disdain for the Quades. Appearances, however, had to be kept up.
Rebecca immediately ordered the servants to prepare tea
Myrtle smiled warmly. “Oh, you two are too kind! This must be Ruby, right? What a beautiful young lady!”

After some pleasantries, Myrtle got straight to the point. “Drake, let’s not waste time. We’re here today about the marriage between our children.
Drake feigned confusion. “The marriage between the children?”
Myrtle nodded. “Yes, the engagement between Caleb and Ruby.”
Years ago, when the Moores were in financial trouble, Hank, the head of the Quades, had helped them. In exchange, the Moores had promised that if they ever had a daughter, she would marry Caleb, the Quades‘ fifth son,
At the time. Caleb had only been four years old.
Eight years later, when the Moores finally had a daughter, Hank made the long trip to Cloudhaven to attend her birthday celebration, where they exchanged engagement tokens.
That was when the families officially became connected.
Ruby smoothly added, “Mrs. Myrtle, I’m only 18. I’m not thinking about marriage yet. Besides, the Quades are such an established family, and I’m just an ordinary girl. I don’t think I’m suited for Mr. Quade
Myrtle, not picking up on Ruby’s sarcasm, smiled broadly. “Oh, you’re definitely suitable! With your beauty, how could you not be? Don’t worry, since the engagement was made, the Quades will keep their word. Caleb will definitely marry you.”
Ruby’s expression darkened.
This woman is so out of touch. She doesn’t even realize that I’m not saying I’m not good enough for Calch–Caleb’s the one who doesn’t deserve me.
But this old hag is acting as though I’m the one reaching for something beyond my reach.
Ugh! How revolting!
