Chapter 22 Make a Killing
“They say that girls have a destiny like a sesame seed, it doesn’t matter if they lack education, as long as they marry a good husband in the future. Louisa continued. Jocelyn is so beautiful. She will definitely be able to marry into a good family in the future and become a wealthy lady?”
Louisa, born in the 60s, still held onto her traditional beliefs. In her view, a girl’s looks guaranteed her a bright future.
After all, this was a world that was judged by appearances,
“Louisa, do you think wealthy people are blind these days? A rich man doesn’t just want a pretty wife; she’s got to have a good education too!” Helga chimed in, glancing over at Jocelyn before lowering her voice. “Besides, with how stunning Jocelyn is. I bet her list of ex–boyfriends is a mile long. Do you think she’s still a virgin? No rich man is going to marry someone like that”
Wealthy men weren’t fools!
It wasn’t just about beauty anymore. Even Helga herself wouldn’t let her son. I
marry someone uneducated.
Louisa frowned. “You shouldn’t say such things! Jocelyn doesn’t seem like that kind of person to me.
For a girl, reputation was everything.
Helga snorted. “Some people act one way in public and another in private. You can’t tell just by looking! Does a thief’s face scream. I’m a thief? Of course not!”
She quickly added. “I’m only saying this to you, though. I wouldn’t mention it in front of others.
Helga couldn’t help but feel a twinge of jealousy. Jocelyn was just too beautiful–so much so that Helga instinctively doubted her character.
Why did jocelyn get to look like that?
When envy couldn’t be expressed openly, it often turned into subtle criticism, almost unconsciously.
Luckily, God was fair. Jocelyn might have a pretty face, but she didn’t have a high IQ or an impressive education.
Louis found Helga’s comments a bit harsh. “You can’t be so sure. What if Jocelyn’s still in school? Lots of kids take summer jobs these days”
“No way.” Helga replied firmly. Just look at her–she doesn’t seem like the stbdious type. And if she was just here to fill in for Shana for a month, why would she work so hard? It’s obvious she wants to stay here long–term.”
To Helga, Jocelyn’s diligence was nothing more than an attempt to curry favor and secure a permanent position.
Louisa watched Jocelyn bustling around, “I don’t think that’s the case… Helga, maybe you’re reading too much into
“Reading too much? These are facts! Louisa, if you don’t believe me, just wait and see in a month, Helga declared confidently,
Meanwhile, Jocelyn remained unaware that she’d become the subject of such intense scrutiny
She worked tirelessly, barely taking a break all evening. Seeing this, Louisa handed her a cold Coke. “Jocelyn, Lake a sip and rest for a bir
“Thank you, Louisa,” Jocelyn replied, accepting the glass with both hands.
Louisa’s eyes softened with approval.
Details like this reveal a person’s upbringing and manners, Jocelyn’s gesture of using both hands to receive the drink showed respect and good family values.

Louisa reminded her, “Be careful on your way home.”

Jocelyn jogged over. “Richard, why are you here?”
“Your mom said it’s not safe for a young woman to walk home alone at night, so she sent me to pick you up,” Richard explained.
Jocelyn nodded. feeling a strange sense of warmth..
As someone used to protect others, this was the first time she’d been on the receiving end of such care from her family. It felt… unfamiliar, but not unpleasant.
“Are we still going to that place tonight?” Richard asked, lowering his voice.
Jocelyn knew exactly what he meant. “Of course!”
She desperately needed money–to buy a phone, a computer, and better gear, and to finally move out of her basement apartment.
Having a phone and computer was essential for bigger plans.
Right now, the quickest way to make money is the casino.
“Let’s go!” Richard said enthusiastically. “We’ll make a killing tonight!”
With determination, the two headed toward the casino.
As usual, the casino was packed.
But luck didn’t seem to be on Jocelyn’s side tonight–she lost six rounds in a row.
