Reversed Destinies of the Fake Heiress Ch 4

Chapter 4 Do Unto Others
Am I worse than an idiot?
Ruby took a deep breath, forcing herself to calm down before speaking again. “Eighteen years have passed. Even if there’s evidence, it’s long buried. You’re just clutching at straws!”
Jocelyn gave a slight smile. “Without evidence, your words are nothing more than speculation—or worse, slander. If you want to take this further, Wynsteria has a law against defamation.”
The strange unease Ruby had felt earlier only intensified.
Ruby knew it was pointless to keep arguing with Jocelyn, especially when she was clearly in the weaker position. The weaker side always attracted the public’s attention and sympathy.
Ruby’s eyes began to well up as her voice cracked. “For 18 years, I’ve lived in the shadows, while you enjoyed everything I should have had. You lived in comfort in my home, while I was stuck in a dark, cold basement with your vile mother, barely scraping by. What right do you have to stand there and judge me?”
At Ruby’s words, Rebecca’s hand trembled as it clutched Ruby’s.
We have been enjoying a life of luxury in a beautiful villa, while Ruby, our true daughter, had been living in a basement …
Is that really a place fit for anyone?
Rebecca nearly lost her composure, her anger boiling over.
The onlookers observed Ruby with sympathy, their faces full of pity.
Jocelyn raised her gaze, her voice gentle as she spoke. “We’re both victims in this. I’m not blaming you; I’m just stating the facts. And as I’ve said, I’m leaving now. I’ll go by the last name Leif from now on, and I’ll have no ties to the Moores, so you don’t need to keep holding on to this.”
Ruby’s tears flowed freely now. “I’m not holding on to anything! Why are you pushing me? I’m just saying everything about this situation is fishy! I know you don’t want to leave my family; after all, you’ve been my parents’ daughter all these years. From now on, I’ll treat you like my real sister … ”
“My God! Caleb! Your fiancée is far too kind! She still wants to forgive the fake daughter!” Dominic couldn’t help but gush. He’d never seen someone so forgiving.
Upon hearing this, the crowd around them began to shower Ruby with praise.
Jocelyn smiled softly. “Thank you for your kindness, but this isn’t my home anymore.”
Ruby froze.
What is Jocelyn thinking?
I’ve already tried to convince her to stay, so why is she still insisting on leaving?
Without hesitation, Rebecca’s husband, Drake Moore, motioned for someone to bring over a document. “Since you’ve made up your mind, you’ll need to sign this disinheritance agreement.”
In Wynsteria, adopted children had inheritance rights. Since Jocelyn had chosen to sever ties with the Moores, Drake didn’t want to leave his legacy to a non-blood relative.
Jocelyn signed the document without a second thought.
There were two copies.
She took one and turned to face Drake and Rebecca. “Mr. and Mrs. Moore, goodbye.”
Now that the disinheritance was official, there was no need to keep calling them “Mom” and “Dad.”
Continuing to do so would only raise suspicions about her motives.
Jocelyn bowed respectfully before them. “Thank you for raising me all these years.”
One should never forget kindness, no matter the circumstances.
The Moores had taken care of original Jocelyn for years, and now Jocelyn bowed in her place.
Ruby thought to herself, no, I can’t just let Jocelyn walk away like this. I have to make sure Jocelyn takes a bullet in my place!
If Jocelyn leaves, who will marry that j*rk?
A malicious gleam appeared in Ruby’s eyes, quickly replaced by a mask of feigned concern. “Jocelyn, I don’t want you to leave. It’s easier to rise from poverty to wealth, but much harder to go from wealth to poverty. I’m worried you’ll struggle adjusting to life in the basement. Stay, and we can all take care of Mom and Dad together.”
Ruby’s words were carefully calculated.
First, she accused Jocelyn of being an ungrateful child, leaving without returning any of the kindness she had been shown.
Second, she was presenting herself as the generous one in front of the crowd.
The onlookers exchanged knowing looks, their faces filled with judgment toward Jocelyn.
Yeah, isn’t Jocelyn being a little ungrateful?
She’s been raised with so much love and comfort, and now she’s just walking away?
Jocelyn turned her head slightly and spoke in a calm voice, “Ms. Moore, if I remember correctly, my mother also raised you for 18 years. Why don’t you stay with her and repay her kindness?”
Ruby was caught off guard.
Before Ruby could react, Jocelyn stood up, lifting her chin with quiet confidence. The light cast a cold glow over her face. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
Ruby couldn’t believe it.
What is going on?
How has Jocelyn, of all people, become so eloquent?
Could this be the result of my rebirth? Butterfly effect?
