Chapter 9 Done For
“Thanks, Mom.”
Jocelyn speared a piece of watermelon with a toothpick and took a bite, savoring the sweetness of the perfectly ripe fruit.
“Mom, you should have some too,” she offered, holding out a piece to Shana.
Shana smiled softly. “I’m not a fan of watermelon. You go ahead and eat it.”
Like any mother, Shana always wanted the best for her daughter.
Jocelyn felt a surge of emotion, placing the piece of watermelon back on the plate. She hugged Shana tightly. “Don’t worry, Mom. I’ll make sure you and Uncle Richard have a good life.”
…
As the night deepened, time slipped past midnight.
The basement was silent and still, the kind of quiet that seemed to weigh heavily on the air.
A figure moved carefully toward the door, gently closing it behind them. Richard exhaled in relief.
Thank goodness no one noticed me slipping away.
Just as he thought he was safe, a hand tapped his shoulder.
“Jesus! A ghost!” Richard jumped, his heart racing, his face draining of color as he almost leaped out of his skin.
“Shh,” Jocelyn whispered, pressing her finger to her lips. “Uncle Richard, quiet down. If Mom hears us, we won’t be able to leave.”
Richard let out a deep breath, relieved it was only Jocelyn. “Go away! I’m just a poor guy, not someone you would want as an uncle!”
Jocelyn wasn’t offended and silently followed him, walking behind him like they were casually out for a stroll.
Richard glanced back, his annoyance evident. “What are you doing, Jocelyn Moore? Why are you following me?”
Jocelyn smiled slightly. “Uncle Richard, my last name is Leif. Besides, this path doesn’t belong to you, so if you can walk it, I can too.”
Richard scoffed under his breath, cursing as he walked ahead in frustration.
It didn’t take long for them to arrive at a brightly lit area.
This was the largest underground casino in Cloudhaven.
Before stepping inside, Richard clasped his hands together, muttering a prayer. “Lord, please bless me tonight. If I hit it big, I’ll make a big donation in your honor!”
The casino was filled with smoke and the sounds of excited chatter. People cheered over their winnings, while others groaned over their losses.
Richard was a regular here, and as soon as he walked in, several people called out to him. “Richard’s here!”
“Hey, Richard!”
“Who’s this with you, Richard? Family?”
Richard glanced at Jocelyn and suddenly realized she had followed him into the casino. He quickly took a step back, distancing himself from her. “I don’t know her! We’re not related!”
Jocelyn didn’t seem bothered by his response. She simply followed him to the farthest corner of the casino, where a large crowd had gathered around a gambling table.
Excited voices rang out. “Big! It’s gonna be big!”
The dealer uncovered the dice container and smiled. “Three, one, five! Small!”
“F*ck! Why is it small?!” someone yelled, frustrated.
“This is terrible luck!” another person grumbled.
The dealer shook the dice again, and fresh betting options appeared on the table, allowing players to bet on specific numbers. The more precise their bet, the greater their rewards.
Jocelyn perked up, focusing intently on the sound of the dice rattling in the container.
Richard placed his bet on “small,” carefully choosing his numbers and praying for good luck.
“Uncle Richard, bet on ‘big’ and choose five, six, and one,” Jocelyn whispered.
Richard shot her a sharp look, scoffing. What does she know about gambling? Acting like she’s some kind of expert—ridiculous.
Once the bets were placed, the dealer revealed the result. “Five, six, one, big!”
Richard blinked in disbelief. No way—Jocelyn was right?
He shook his head to clear his thoughts. It must have been luck. She can’t possibly have known.
He placed another bet.
Jocelyn spoke again, “Uncle Richard, you’ve got it wrong. This round is ‘big,’ with six, six, and one.”
Before he had time to process her words, the dealer called the result, and once again, it matched Jocelyn’s prediction exactly.
She … was right again?
Richard gulped, stunned.
For the third round, he bet “small” again.
I refuse to believe it—how could a kid be right every time?
Jocelyn smiled, unbothered. “This round is ‘big,’ with six, four, and one.”
This can’t be happening. It can’t happen again.
How was it possible that Jocelyn guessed right every time? She can’t possibly keep getting “big” right again and again.
Richard’s eyes narrowed, focusing intently on the dealer as the dice container was shaken.
It has to be “small” this time! It has to!
He can’t lose to Jocelyn—not now. I’m determined to win this time.
When the dealer lifted the lid, Richard’s pale face became even paler.
Once again, Jocelyn was right.
Despite having called the results three times in a row, Richard still couldn’t believe it.
In the blink of an eye, the pay he had just gotten had shrunk down to just 300 dollars. If he lost again, he was done for.
