Chapter 7
My heart began to race.
But his tone was indifferent, his face expressionless.
“Where is this? And who are you?”
The noises of the rainy night muffled everything, and I stood frozen, staring at him until the rain blurred my vision.
I heard my own voice, dry and strained.
“Don’t you remember me, Ben?”
The person in front of me just furrowed his brow lightly.
“Who’s Ben?”
The flashing lights of a police car blinked steadily on top.
I tugged my coat tighter around me, staring blankly at the wet pavement.
“Ms. Palmer, it should be fine now. You can head home. You’ll need to come back to the station tomorrow, though. We need to know the whereabouts and activities of Mr. Greene during his time missing.”
Calvin Greene.
I had just learned his real name.
I nodded, but couldn’t help glancing back at the police station.
Ben was leaning against the wall, not looking at me but staring at the ground.
They had just brought in a drunken woman, probably flirting with him because of his good looks, and he had nearly ripped her arm off.
For some reason, the summer night was colder because of the rain, seeping right through to the bones. Just then, two Rolls Royces pulled up in front of the station.
A distinguished–looking man hurried out of the passenger side and marched straight into the station.
When he saw Ben, the man rushed over and pulled him into a tight hug.
“Calvin, Calvin, you’re okay! Thank God. Everyone thought you were dead!”
Ben let him hold him for a moment, but probably tired of it, he pushed him away.
“Enough. This is gross.”
The man laughed heartily and patted his shoulder.
“Fine. Grandpa is so relieved. Everyone’s waiting for you. How are you feeling? Is your head still hurting?”
