Chapter 8
He led Ben out of the police station, and I stood at the entrance, watching them.
For a brief moment, Ben and I locked eyes.
His dark eyes met mine, unguarded, before slowly drifting away.
I didn’t know where that sense of regret was coming from, or why I was so flustered.
Ben used to be mentally impaired. Could I really have fallen for him?
By the time I snapped out of my thoughts, I had already moved forward and blocked their path.
“Ben, do you really not remember anything?”
I looked up at him.
At that moment, all eyes were on me.
Ben’s expression was as calm as ever, and my heart slowly sank.
“I don’t.”
It seemed like he didn’t want to waste his breath on me.
“You used to live at my house. I—”
A man standing next to him abruptly interrupted, “Hello, Miss. Thank you for looking after my brother during this time. Don’t worry. We’ll make sure to reward you generously.”
“No! I don’t want any reward. I just…”
I just…
I opened my mouth, but no words came out.
In the quiet of the night, Ben’s laugh cut through the silence.
“Perry, give her more money. Otherwise, she’ll keep bothering me. It’s annoying.”
