I froze, a little confused.
Then I noticed the elevator buttons.
It turned out the only option was to go to the top floor.
I had taken the wrong elevator. This must have been a private one.
Seeing the rising amusement in his eyes, I couldn’t take it anymore. I reached for the button to open the doors.
But when I pressed it, nothing happened.
I instinctively turned around to look at the person behind me.
He just raised an eyebrow when our eyes met.
Suddenly, the entire elevator was plunged into darkness.
The sensation of free fall hit me all at once, and before I could react, I slammed into the railing next to me.
The sharp pain in my arm shot through my nerves as I realized the elevator was plummeting. My mind went blank in that moment.
Then, Ben rushed forward and hit the emergency button.
After a violent jolt and shaking, the darkness was replaced by an eerie silence.
I clutched my aching arm, trying to stand, but my foot seemed to have twisted as well.
“What did you do?”
His voice was as cold and mocking as ever.
“What?”
I noticed my voice was trembling.
“This elevator’s never had a problem before. Why is it malfunctioning the moment you step in?”
Was he implying I caused the elevator to break down?
“I didn’t do anything!”
I hurried to explain, but all I received in return was a long silence,
“Ben, I…”
I didn’t know why, but when he acted like this, I always felt the need to defend myself.
I guess I still couldn’t let go. Sometimes, I doubted myself too. Was I really bugging him as he claimed?
In the darkness, I couldn’t tell where he was, but I could hear him making a call, likely to the emergency elevator
service.
