After graduating from college, someone suddenly suggested having a class reunion.
Thinking I was about to leave anyway, I didn’t refuse and decided to go.
Jerry and I were in the same department, so we went to the reunion together.
As soon as we entered, a figure came running over and grabbed Jerry’s arm. “Jerry!”
Ivy clung to Jerry as if she were the real girlfriend.
Most people here were friends who knew about my relationship with Jerry.
They all looked at me awkwardly, but I greeted others casually, as if I didn’t care about any of this.
Jerry frowned and pushed Ivy away. “Stop it.”
At the dinner table, someone asked, “Jerry, when are you two getting married?”
“We’re all waiting for your wedding candy!”
Jerry smiled, “We’re getting engaged next month.”
I kept my head down, eating. Ivy pulled on Jerry’s hand. “Jerry, I want to eat shrimp. Peel one for me, please?”
“Don’t you have hands?” Jerry said, but still peeled one for her.
“Oh right, Susie, I heard you’re transferring to Beijing next week?”
I nodded. “Yeah, changing work environments.”
Jerry’s hands froze as he was peeling shrimp. He turned to look at me in disbelief.
After the class reunion, Jerry sent Ivy home. When we got to our front door, he suddenly stopped and asked me.
“When did you decide to go to Beijing?”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
I opened the window for some fresh air. “I decided last month.”
“Telling you or not telling you is the same, Jerry. We’re not idiots.”
“Let’s break up. Actually, I’ve wanted to say these words for a long time.”
Jerry grabbed my hand, his eyes gradually reddening. “Susie, I know I was wrong before. Give me one more chance.”
“I’ll stay far away from any other women. I’m begging you, don’t leave me, okay?”
Then he took out his phone. “Susie, look, I’ll delete all of Ivy’s contact information right now. Don’t be angry anymore,
okay?”
Jerry deleted with red eyes, tears falling on the screen. “See? I’ve deleted everything. Will you give me one more chance?”
I sighed. “Jerry, why bother? This is the best choice for both of us.”
“Susie, really? You really won’t give me another chance? I won’t go near Ivy again, really. I swear”
Looking at his three raised fingers, I reached out and lowered his hand. “Jerry, when some things accumulate for too long, there’s no room left for reconciliation.”
“Look, every time you knew Ivy was acting, but you were still willing to play along. Why?”
“Because you have her in your heart.”
“So, let’s part on good terms.”
“This is the best arrangement for both of us.”
“Oh, and please apologize to your aunt and uncle for me. Return this to them for me.”
I took off the jade bracelet from my wrist and gently placed it in his palm.
“From today on, let’s each work hard at living our own lives, the lives we want!”
Jerry grabbed my hand, his whole body trembling, “No, Susie. No.”
I pulled his hand off mine. “Jerry, I wish you happiness.”
The moment I opened the car door and got out, a sense of lightness washed over me. I took a deep breath.
How wonderful. The good days that belong to me are about to begin.
