I quickly pieced it together. Ethan must’ve been playing the devoted husband at the company entrance again, but unexpectedly saw Sophia.
He likely got in by claiming to be my husband at the front desk.
Sophia, surprised by Ethan’s presence, was even angrier and repeated how I wronged her.
“Sunny’s always jealous of your affection for me! She’s trying to get back at me!”
Facing the gossiping stares, Ethan felt embarrassed.
“What nonsense are you spouting? Sunny’s not like that! And how could she, a mere employee, decide something like this?”
Sophia looked at Ethan in shock, as if seeing him for the first time.
“You actually side with her and not believe me?”
I crossed my arms, watching them argue coldly.
Even I was surprised that Ethan didn’t blindly side with her.
He used to berate me without question.
“Sunny, can you stop being so sensitive? We can discuss issues calmly. Barging in like this is like a shrew’s quarrel at a market! Stop embarrassing yourself!”
His words felt eerily familiar.
Sensitive, overthinking, jealous, nitpicking, unreasonable…
These were the accusations Ethan used to throw at me.
Sophia swayed as if she couldn’t bear it.
“Who’s causing a scene at the company? I’ve called the police!”
I turned towards the voice, seeing Michael approaching.
He stood by my side, looking very serious.
I realized then that even though he usually smiled at me with such brightness, his aura could be quite intimidating when serious.
Sophia stared at him for a long moment before realizing.
“Aren’t you the guy who took Sunny to the hospital? Oh, so you’re working at your lover’s company, no wonder you’re so arrogant.”
“Sunny, you haven’t even divorced yet, and you’re already paired up with a male lover. Have you no shame?”
Her words made everyone look at me and Michael differently.
Though they didn’t dare gossip aloud, their eyes spoke volumes.
Some faces showed disdain, some were disgusted, and others had the gleam of gossip as they discreetly typed on their phones.
She glanced at my belly, her eyes mocking, and sneered, “You two must’ve been together long ago, right? Is the baby you miscarried actually this guy’s? Did you fake a fall to gain Ethan’s sympathy and guilt?”
“Slap!” Ethan’s hand slammed into Sophia’s face.
The slap was forceful, making Sophia stagger and almost fall. My colleagues quickly supported her to prevent an accident.
Sophia clutched her quickly swelling face, furious.
“You actually hit me? Ethan, are you even human? I’m pregnant with your child!”
The coworkers around us gasped.
The amount of information in just a few minutes was overwhelming.
Ethan, red-faced and furious, yelled, “Stop saying things that cause misunderstandings! I only donated sperm for you to have a child. I never cheated or slept with you! Stop ruining my relationship with my wife!”
Watching the drama unfold, I felt a sense of satisfaction seeing them turn on each other.
But it was also absurd and lowbrow.
Why did I waste so many years entangled with these people, hurting myself for them? It was utterly foolish.
“Ethan, if you’re so free, just sign the divorce papers already. There’s no point dragging this out.”
“And I don’t want to be misjudged as a cheating woman.”
Michael stepped forward, shielding me.
“Sunny, if you have any dissatisfaction with the company’s decision, whether you want to take it online or involve a lawyer, I’m ready to face it.”
I watched the spectacle unfold for quite some time, feeling a mix of satisfaction and disdain at the self-destructive chaos among them. It was crude and laughably pitiful.
How did I ever let myself get tangled up with these people for so long? It was foolish of me to have been so troubled by them.
“Ethan, if you’re just killing time, why not sign the divorce papers now? There’s no point in dragging this out.”
“And I’m tired of being painted as a cheating, unfaithful woman.”
Michael stepped forward to shield me.
“Sunny, if you’re unhappy with the company’s decisions, whether you want to take it online or consult a lawyer, I’ll stand by you all the way.”
“And whoever allowed you to publish plagiarized works and leaked internal information to you, I will uncover them and ensure they face severe consequences!”
