Three million wasn’t that big of a deal, but it
was still money.
And I wanted him to keep spending it.
“Three million dollars, going a third time.”
“Sold!”
The gavel fell, and the bidding was over.
After the auction, people were heading out.
Tiffany walked right up to me, being cocky,
“Summer, are you angry? It was Ethan, he
saw I wanted it and got it, I’ll let you try it on
if you want.”
<
Ethan was next to her, saying nothing.
He really spoiled Tiffany, letting her run all
over me.
I snorted. “No thanks. I’m not that into it. You
can have it. I guess you wouldn’t want to
wear anything good.”
I looked at Ethan.
Ethan’s face went dark. “Summer, what
happened to you? You’ve become bitter. It’s
just a necklace, why are you being so rude? I
can buy you another one.”
I paused, and then locked my eyes with his, “No need, like you said, it’s just a necklace. I
have everything I need.”
<
Ethan was taken aback, as if he had just
remembered something –
I was a jewelry designer.
I’d sold my designs so that he could get his
first million dollars.
He’d been all emotional back then, telling me
he’d buy me all the jewelry in the world.
And all I got was a simple ring.
I was his girlfriend for four years, his wife for
three.
He’d used a small diamond, and had taken
seven years from me.
Promises are only true when they’re made.
And feelings are a fickle thing.
Things had changed.
He had a company, I had my business.
My jewelry designs were sold all over the
world.
I could buy what I wanted.
I didn’t need him anymore.
Ethan seemed a little lost, and when he
looked at me again, his eyes were full of
sadness and regret.
Then, Chad stepped in between Ethan and
me, blocking him off completely.
く
Chad said in a drawl, “Ethan, I see your taste
has changed. You’ve gone for the ‘basic‘ vibe
now?”
Chad glanced at Tiffany as he said the word
“basic.”
Tiffany was trying not to react, but her face
was all twisted in anger.
I couldn’t watch this anymore.
“Chad, let’s go,” I said.
Chad seemed like he enjoyed my calling him by his first name. He smiled, “Alright.”
I thought it was finally going to be peaceful.
But. Ethan wanted to reverse
<
But, Ethan wanted to reverse course.
09
I usually keep my phone on silent when I’m
sleeping.
When I woke up, there were 30 missed calls
and 99+ messages on WeChat.
All from Ethan:
[Summer, we need to talk.]
[I’m coming over.]
[No one’s here. Where are you?]
[That hospital visit, what kind of appointment
did you have?]
<
[Are you pregnant?]
[If you are, we can stay together.]
[If you don’t reply, I’ll wait here.]
[Summer… why were you not at home all
night?]
[Why did you fire the help?]
Because, I had moved.
There were too many memories at that house,
so I sold it.
Chad found out and, being the father, offered
me a beach house and hired a private doctor
and nurse.
The beach was beautiful, and the weather
was perfect for pregnancy.
I accepted it.
Anyone would.
