“Dad, we should separate that naughty gray rabbit. It has already plucked off so much of their fur.” Song Ruying was somewhat irritated.
Whenever she was watching, the grey rabbit didn’t dare to act. However, as soon as she turned her gaze away, it would start plucking fur from the other rabbits again.
Song Zhenyu was also somewhat troubled. He didn’t have any extra cages left to raise them separately.
Zhang Yingyue heard that and had a suspicion. Thus, before Song Zhenyu could speak, she called from inside the house. “Zhenyu, come inside. I have something to tell you.
Upon hearing Zhang Yingyue’s call, Song Zhenyu immediately discarded the rabbit he was holding and swiftly turned to enter the house.
After entering the house, Zhang Yingyue turned to Song Zhenyu and said, “Zhenyu, I think I might know what’s going on with the rabbit, but I’m not entirely sure. I’ve just heard others mention it casually. They said that when a rabbit is about to give birth, it will pluck fur to make a nest. That rabbit might be expecting baby rabbits.”
Surprised, Song Zhenyu asked, “What should we do then?”
Song Ruying followed into the room, listening quietly. When she heard about the newborn rabbits, she couldn’t help but get excited. She spoke up. “Dad, let’s raise them. That way, we’ll have lots of rabbits in the future. I can gather plenty of grass for them to eat.”
When Song Zhenyu came to his senses, he was somewhat elated at the thought of having a liter of rabbits.
“Zhenyu, regardless of whether that’ll happen, let’s separate that rabbit first. If we don’t have a cage, it’s not a big deal. We can cover it with a basket for the time being.” A glimmer shone in Zhang Yingyue’s eyes, too.
Even though the future was still uncertain, the mere thought of it brightened her mood considerably.
Song Zhenyu nodded. “All right, we’ll do it your way.”
When Song Zhenyu went out to separate the four rabbits, he specifically weighed them. The grey rabbit that might’ve been pregnant was indeed heavier than the others. Moreover, it was feisty, kicking nonstop when he picked it up.
With a smile, Song Zhenyu separated it out.
Perhaps due to anticipation, the mood of the entire family was quite good, and they enjoyed even the less- -than–stellar rice.
Song Zhenyu couldn’t bear to eat cured meat every day Hence, most of the time, he resorted to eating boiled vegetables.
He cooked the vegetables in the same water he had poached his eggs in, fooling himself into believing it had a hint of richness,

The meal wasn’t great, but the three children savored every bite as if they were indulging in a gourmet feast. In his heart, Song Zhenyu quietly hoped that better days were on the horizon.
The following morning, Song Zhenyu had specifically crafted a new cage for the rabbit.
Song Ruying, accompanied by her two older brothers, bad caught some bugs for Song Zhenyu to use in setting his traps.
After all was said and done, Song Ruying, along with her two older brothers, went off to pull out some grass to feed the rabbits.
Once Song Zhenyu finished inspecting the trap and returned, he was carrying a dead wild chicken in his hand.
Song Tianheng and Song Tiangi gathered around, their eyes wide with anticipation. They didn’t utter a word, but their gazes clearly asked, “Dad, are we going to eat it?
Song Ruying was also wondering whether the chicken would be sold or caten.
It seemed as though Song Zhenyu had discerned the children’s confusion. He chuckled and said, “If we take this dead chicken to sell in the city, people would complain about it not being fresh. If we boil it and treat it properly, I will make chicken soup for you all to enjoy tonight.”
“Awesome!” Song Tianheng and Song Tiangi were overjoyed.
Song Zhenyu gently touched the three children, holding a wild chicken that weighed about two kilograms. Even after plucking its feathers and removing the innards, it was still one and a half kilograms heavy. He chopped it into small pieces with a few swift cuts, planning to stew half and save the other half for later.
After stewing the chicken, Song Zhenyu went off to digh hole.
The aroma of the chicken soup was rich and enticing, so much so that Song Ruying was completely enveloped by its scent. When she entered the room to Help Zhang Yingyue change Song Shuying’s diaper. she couldn’t resist taking a deep breath, teasing the baby. “Shuying, can you smell that delicious aroma? That’s meat, you know. It’s a shame you’re still too young. Otherwise, I would’ve fed you some.”
Zhang Yingyue, sewing a cotton coat, chuckled and remarked, “It smells that good, huh?”
Song Ruying nodded earnestly. “Mmm, it smells so wonderful. I’ve never encountered such a delightful scent before.”
Nor had she ever tasted something that delicious before
Perhaps recalling unpleasant memories, Song Ruying cast her eyes downward.
Zhang Yingyue sighed, gently stroking Song Ruying’s hair, and said, “Once we’ve hatched many chicks at home, we’ll be able to have chicken once a month.”
Song Ruying looked up at Zhang Yingyue, smiling with a nod. “All right.”
Song Shuying kicked her legs excitedly. The only time she felt free was during diaper changes each day, and she had to make the most of these brief moments of activity.
After changing the diaper, Song Ruying gently held Song Shuying’s small hand against her face.

Song Ruying was seated next to Song Shuying, chuckling as she said. “No, she won’t. She smells so nice too, sweet, just like the candies Aunt Lingzhi used to give us.”
Speaking of sweets, Song Ruying hadn’t finished hers yet. She didn’t have time to take it out yesterday. She reached into her pocket, unwrapped the paper, and offered the candy to Zhang Yingyue. “Mom, have
some.
Caught off guard. Zhang Yingyue was deeply moved, almost to the point of tears. She held back with great effort, her voice choked with emotion as she said, “My child, I don’t need them. You should go ahead and enjoy them yourself.”
Song Ruying shook her head. “I want you to have it to help improve your health.”
Song Ruying observed Zhang Yingyue. During that period, Zhang Yingyue’s complexion had improved significantly. Yet, she was still filled with fear, afraid that Zhang Yingyue would turn as pale as she did on the day of Song Shuying’s birth.
The profound scent of blood that day was something Song Ruying could never forget for the rest of her life. It was at that moment that she suddenly understood the concept of death. She realized that once her mother passed away, the latter would be gone forever.
She didn’t want to be motherless, so she popped a piece of candy into Zhang Yingyue’s mouth and then got up to wash the diapers.
Tears trickled down Zhang Yingyue’s cheeks as she held the candy in her mouth.
She sighed, gently squeezing Song Shuying’s small hand as she wrapped her up, saying, “Shuying, the heavens have been kind to me, allowing me to meet your father and have such understanding children like you. I must take good care of my health, watch you grow up, and marry well…”
Song Shuying studied Zhang Yingyue intently before offering her a gentle smile. I will. Once I’m grown up a bit. I’ll help out the family. I’ll also personally oversee and choose an excellent match for Ruying. As for my brothers. If they can be helped, they’ll naturally have a good marriage and family. If not, I guess I’ll care for them, and they l become my apothecary boys once I’ve become a doctor. Through their labor, they can also lead a good life.
Once Zhang Yingyue had tucked her in, Song Shuying began to sleep. Being an infant, it was best for her to get some rest obediently.
Zhang Yingyue watched as Song Shuying fell asleep quickly. Leaning over, she gently kissed Song Shuying’s forehead. “Such a good girl. Sleep well. I will make clothes for your father and your siblings.”
Zhang Yingyue was quietly sewing clothes inside the house. By the time Song Ruying had finished washing the diapers, the chicken stew was ready. She removed the large firewood, leaving a small flame the stove to slowly simmer the chicken.
in
She had once again ventured outside, gathering grass and catching bugs, feeding the chickens and rabbits.
As dusk gradually fell, Song Zhenyu, who had been digging all day, looked at the nearly half–acre of land he had successfully tilled. He felt a deep sense of accomplishment in his heart.
