Song Zhenyu put down his hoe and said, “Tianqi, Tianheng, we’re done with today’s work. Let’s head home and get some food.”
Song Tianqi’s and Song Tianheng’s eyes immediately lit up as they looked toward the house. Without a moment’s hesitation, they dashed off in that direction.
The tantalizing aroma of the stewed chicken had reached them long before they arrived. It was simply irresistible.
Staring at his lively and innocent son, Song Zhenyu checkled. It was as if all his fatigue had been swept away, He, too, picked up his hoe and headed home.
With Song Ruying assisting in cooking and tending the fire, Song Zhenyu didn’t feel tired at all.
He went to check on the rabbit, suspecting it was about to give birth. There was no sign of any movement yet, but it had already pulled out a lot of its own fur tone the nest.
The other rabbits were munching on the fresh grass, looking quite lively. They would surely be fine if cared for a few days.
Once he had finished tilling the entire field, Song Zhenyu planned to head into town to sell the few rabbits he had. While there, he intended to buy some vegetable seeds to plant around his field.
The meal was ready, and the three children had been eagerly waiting for a while.
Song Zhenyu meticulously portioned out the meal, ensuring each person received three pieces of chicken. The trio then began to eat leisurely, holding their bowls. As for the remaining food in the pot, the three children didn’t even spare it a glance.
Seeing his children having such a good temperament, Song Zhenyu felt both comforted and distressed. He ladled out a bowl of chicken soup and chicken for Zhang Yingyue, saying, “Yingyue, have a taste. The children are enjoying it very much.”
The chunks of chicken in Zhang Yingyue’s bowl were barge, and at a glance, one could tell they were from the chicken leg.
With concern, Zhang Yingyue asked, “Zhenyu, have you tasted it yet?”
Song Zhenyu couldn’t bear to eat it, intending to dissuale Zhang Yingyue. Yet, before he could utter a word, she silenced him with a piece of chicken coming his way. In her tender voice, she said, “I bet you haven’t eaten. Open up. I’ll eat after you’ve had some
Zhang Yingyue knew exactly the kind of person Song Zhenyu was. Hence, she felt compelled to feed himm that piece of chicken.
Left with no other option, Song Zhenyu could only gridhis teeth and accept it.
The aroma was truly enticing. Song Zhenyu found it so delicious that he couldn’t bear to spit out even the bones. Seeing that Zhang Yingyue had also eaten, he cheerfully dug into his meal.
The aroma of the chicken was enticing, and the soup was nourishing. After Zhang Yingyue had eaten it,

On the twentieth of August, Song Zhenyu woke up early. He checked on the rabbits first thing, but they were still quiet. After securing the cage, he left to insped the traps.
He
e returned swiftly, bearing two live wild chickens and hare.
Unable to contain his smile, he bundled up the wild chickens‘ feet and went inside to share the good news with Zhang Yingyue. “My dear, we’re truly lucky. I caught two more wild chickens today. The traps we set yesterday haven’t been triggered yet, and a few have been damaged.”
As he spoke, Song Zhenyu couldn’t help but feel astonished because he hadn’t returned empty–handed for quite a while.
Zhang Yingyue was also astonished. “That’s fantastic.”
Although she was delighted, her joy was tinged with confusion. She couldn’t help but wonder why he kept returning with prizes in hand. With those thoughts, a sense of fear also crept into Zhang Yingyue’s heart.
Zhang Yingyue asked, “Why is this happening so frequently?”
Song Zhenyu was perplexed, scratching his head. “I’m not sure myself. Perhaps it’s just good luck.”
They had been getting so incredibly lucky that they couldn’t believe it.
In the past, they were fortunate if they managed to catch something once or twice a year.
With the few traps Song Zhenyu had set up, if he could earn a catch every time with them, his could be described as downright unbelievable.
As Song Zhenyu thought about it, he was somewhat frustrated. He recalled that every time he set a trap. the insects he used as bait were caught by Song Ruying. The one time he used the insects that he caught himself, he ended up with nothing.
Song Zhenyu suddenly slapped his forehead, “Yingyue I’ve just remembered something. The insects I’ve been using as bait these past few times were all caught by Ruying. She feeds them to our hens every day, and our hens have started laying eggs. Do you think it could be because these insects are so good that not only do our hens eat well, but even the wild animals are particularly fond of them?”
At that moment, it was as if everything suddenly became clear to him.
“Speaking of, Ruying seems to be catching bugs every day, and it feels like they’re–never–ending. remarked Zhang Yingyue.
Song Zhenyu was feeling somewhat downcast. He had set up the trap, baiting it with both insects and grass, Wild chickens favored insects, but he wasn’t sure if rabbits preferred grass tainted with the scent of bugs.
“I’ll head out first to take a look.” Song Zhenyu was plagued by doubts, and with those words, he turned.
and left the room.
Zhang Yingyue too harbored doubts, so she remained silent.
Song Tianheng and Song Tianqi were roused from their sleep, clueless about what had just transpired.

Once Song Zhenyu had left, it was then that Song Ruying found the strength to speak up, asking softly, “Mom, will I still be able to catcli bugs to feed the chickens in the future?”
Zhang Yingyue thought about how the chickens weren’t sick after eating the bugs, and the bugs Song Ruying brought even benefited the family. Thus, she reached out and gently touched Song Ruying’s hair and said. “Of course. It’s a good thing.”
Upon hearing that, Song Ruying was relieved, her face lighting up with joy. “Mom, I’ll feed the chickens every day. Once they hatch their chicks, I’ll feed them too. The grass over there is growing exceptionally well, teeming with insects. I caught a bunch yesterday, and after a night, I bet there’ll be plenty more there today.
Song Ruying was happy to think about her routine of catching bugs. Each time, she would ensure that not a single bug was left behind. Yet, by the next day, a fresh swarm would always appear. Her family’s roosters and hens were particularly fond of those bugs,
Song Zhenyu returned swiftly. Looking at Zhang Yingyue, he said, “Yingyue, there were quite a few insects in that patch, especially the earthworms. They were particularly plump. Other than that, there isn’t much to say. It’s just earthworms and crickets, nothing out of the ordinary. Don’t worry.”
Zhang Yingyue was relieved that nothing bad had been discovered and simply assumed the heavens had smiled upon them.
Feeling reassured, Song Zhenyu was able to work with a sense of ease.
In the following few days, Song Zhenyu, along with Song Tianheng and Song Tianqi, devoted themselves to tilling the land.
On the twenty–second of August, it was midday when Song Ruying noticed something odd while she was feeding the rabbits. The grey rabbit wasn’t eating its grass. Instead, it was lying motionless in its burrow.
Driven by curiosity, Song Ruying prodded the grey rabbit with a stick. As the rabbit hopped away, out a startled cry, “Ah!”
she let
Upon hearing the commotion, Zhang Yingyue became alarmed, thinking something was amiss. She quickly called out from within the house, “Ruying, what’s happened? Is something wrong?”
Song Ruying responded with a delighted exclamation, Mom, the grey rabbit has given birth to bunnies.”
Upon hearing that, Zhang Yingyue smiled as she said, “It’s already noon. Go and tell your father to come back. He can have a drink and take a break.”
Song Ruying, brimming with joy, nodded and ran out with a smile.
In no time, Song Zhenyu, Song Tianheng, and Song Tianqi returned. Upon learning that the grey rabbit had given birth to bunnies, they were delighted. They decided not to sell the grey rabbit anymore but to keep it instead.
Song Zhenyu took another look to see if there were any male rabbits among the others. He planned to keep a pair, one male and one female, for breeding purposes.
The days were becoming more and more hopeful. As such, Song Zhenyu felt more invigorated even when tilling the soil.
